Videoing hunts

Wanting to step up my video game this year, traditionally it’s been iPhones and a GoPro that’s 5-6 years old. The question is for someone who wants to just video for himself/family. Is a new GoPro the way to go or is there a better budget option for video/cameras that shoot video out there?

Sony, but it's bulkier than GoPro or Smartphone.

I'm a sucker for my old camcorder. I have shopped for years for something better, but I love having a big zoom (40x optical) on a camera that fits in a pocket and just haven't pulled the trigger waiting for a bigger zoom and a bigger sensor and still a decent size. I have been eyeing the under 1k range and there are a couple that would probably upgrade my stuff quite a bit.
