Learned a lot with this post thanks all. Just wondering some point down the long road the techs decide a cell system is obsolite and go to satelite communications solely?
Land-based communications for the masses is here to stay. There is no repairing or upgrading a communications satellite. They're on a one-way trip to space (until they burn up falling back through the atmosphere), and the only way you fix a broken one is to launch a new satellite to take its place. $$$
I think I heard a story about Mark Zuckerberg (the facebook guy) working on a project to put telecommunications gear on high endurance UAV's to periodically serve remote areas in Africa, but I don't recall all the details and it sounded like more a novelty "look what we can do" stunt than a serious communications infrastructure idea.
