Im looking in to a spring over the counter bear tag. Im looking at Montana. Looking for advice on area of the state to start looking. Im coming from Indiana an dont know anything about hunting bears. The places i have been looking at on the map are places I can hike in. Dont plan to do any backcountry hunting.

Pretty much everywhere in the western part of the state holds bears. Generally, the northwest corner of the state probably has the highest densities.

Pick a drainage and glass the south/southeast aspects where the grass is greening up. You need to be glassing until dark, those last 2 hours of daylight are prime time.

Timing is very dependant on snowpack and how fast it comes off.

Good luck, it's a great time of year to be out.

Bears are all over western MT, densities vary from one area to the next. Make sure to take your bear ID test, pick a mountain range and go hunt. Glassing is a great option where you can. However, about half the bears I see are while still hunting likely areas.
