I just returned from my 1st elk hunt. I went with Wapiti Ridge out of Cody, Wyoming. We hunted for 7 days on the South Fork of the Shoshone River in the Washakie Wilderness. The experience far surpassed my expectations despite the slow hunting. The weather just isn't there yet to push the big herds through their migration. Regardless the guys got the job done and it was a great success.

Thanks to all of you that replied with advice, tips, etc. as I got ready. Thanks to this board for being such an amazing resource to prepare me for this adventure. I'm hooked on elk hunting.....don't know when I'll get back but someday for sure.

Rifle: Nosler M48 Liberty in 280AI
Bullet: Nosler 150gr Accubond LR
Distance: 300 yards
Double lung kill shot and didn't walk two steps.

Awsome bull! Particulars of the hunt?
Sorry it took so long. It was a DIY hunt in idaho that I went on with a couple friends in the Frank. We went back and had basecamp about 16ish miles from camp. We had 2 mules to carry the camp gear in which we were fortunate to have. The hunt was slow for the first few days without seeing any signs of elk, or any living creature other than grouse and black bears. After one morning hunt, one of my friends came back to camp around lunch saying he saw 12 cows and 1 nice bull up the canyon, "he only had a deer tag." Long story short we moved camp as close as we could the rest of that evening. The next morning we got up a few hours before dark to make our hike up the mountain. It took us about 2 hours to get to the last spot he saw the elk according to his GPS. Sure enough as the sun rose the elk were right there. It all happened so fast, I ended up shooting him 150 yards freehand while he was walking. He went 20 yards and the rest was history. I will admit it wouldn't have happened without help of a fellow rockslide member and I couldn't be more thankful. After that we didn't see another elk the next 4 days.

Good job Groe. I hunted it last year and you're sure right that it's a tough hunt! Had bugles daily there and hope to get back someday!

Wish I had slowed down and taken better pictures but all I could think about was how much work I had ahead of me

Finally we killed an elk on our fourth year. Hunted first 3 CO archery OTC, I myself have cut three P&Y bulls but never recovered one. Then my buddy came through on this guy in Montana. Called him in (twice) to 40 yards.
