Im looking at an otc rifle elk hunt in the la garita wilderness for 2019 and am asking for some info. Access, hunting pressure, places to start my research aside from contacting biologists which I will be doing first. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Feel free to pm me. thanks in advance.

Well that covers two units for starters. GMU66 and 67. I would first assess which unit you have the points to draw. Good luck with the new draw system because they have been limited draw units for many a year. I think I recall a time in the 90s when they were otc.

Actually, chin, part of the la garita wilderness is in unit 68 which is OTC. Based on the info that the OP is putting out there that’s the only unit he could be asking about that I’m aware of.

yes we are looking at unit 68.

I hear the beetle kill is terrible and decreasing elk numbers for that area. Could be hard to possibly find elk but lower hunters as well. I’ve looked at this area myself but due to low elk numbers I haven’t tried it
