Where are you getting those numbers from?
Going to go out on an interweb limb here and guess that poster was comparing a 7stw bullet G1 bc over .6 and a a swift a frame with a g1 bc of .3. Out of the winny

See this argument a lot any time someone asks about the 6.5 creedmoor

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with a 7 stw, but there's just no way that 100fps=25% more energy if your comparing apples to apples. Same bullet in a 7mag and a 7stw. I will concede that a factory rifle in 7 Rem mag with a short throat isn't going to come so close to a 7 stw. No comment on the 300 win mag, but I'm pretty sure we can all agree that it's a great round too.

I just ran the numbers for the 7 WSM I used to own pushing a 180 Hybrid 2980fps the 500 yard energy is 2196 ft/lbs. For my 7-300WinM pushing a 180 Hybrid 3165fps energy at 500 yards is 2502 ft/lbs. My last 300 WinM pushing 215s 2950fps energy at 500 yards 3017. All numbers for where I live at 1100 ft. The 300 starts to distance itself as the distance grows.

There are a lot of 7STW’s here in Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky guarding bean fields.
I live near Whitaker’s Gun Shop and see them on the gun racks every visit.
My uncle and his buddies all shoot the 7STW and have since the inception.
I’ve never fallen for one as I’m a 264 Win Mag fan.

I had a custom 7STW built about 4 or so years before the 28nosler came out. Its has a long throat and a wyatts box and loaded rounds are over 3.7" COL. It is a heavy sender fluted contour 1-9" broughton barrel 27" long. Shoots 168gr bergers @ 3320fps ABSOLUTE HAMMER. This is not the norm and I go through brass in 3 reloads but that is what the rifle likes and I don't load anything else.

Then a few years ago I started building my own rifles and started with some 28Noslers. 7stw and 28 nosler are almost identical case capacity. The advantage to the 28Nosler is a shorter fatter powder column "in my mind making it more efficient" it will drive bullets faster all else being equal. And you don't have to mess with super long mag boxes to get the equal performance of the STW. Brass for both, Now that Bertrum is making both is a wash. The 28nosler is the new age STW that's just my POV on the STW.

If you want to buy one ill sell it ahhahaah

And my 7 wsm is besting that even with just 67.5 grains of powder. Would have thought 30% more powder would hiked more velocity than that.

I can shoot a 180 out of a 28N at 3220. Making the 7STW seem anemic.

Thanks for all of the well thought out responses. 7mm has always been a favorite caliber for me and hadn't ever had a chance to play with a 7mmSTW and wanted to hear from those with more experience.

With similar case capacity I'd bet you could do close to that with a STW as well using RL33 or N570. But to the point, STW is obsolete with the coming of 28 nosler.

Probably, but that’s with retumbo. Could probably get a bit more with the 570 out of the 28N.

But I agree the 28N does seem to be a better choice.

One of my buddies has built a few STW’s and they won’t quite run with the 28 Nosler but it’s fairly close.

My FIL had one back in the early 90’s. Said it was the gun to have if you were cool then. I can see why, prior to the RUM’s being brought out it was kinda the king of speed outside of some obscure wildcats.

I wouldn’t own one these days, but I can certainly see the appeal of it back when it was first introduced.

Back in the day the were bad mamma jammas! Wish I knew then what I do now! I do know the STW could push a 140g ballistic tip fast enough to put a 10” hole in 1/2” plywood backstops! That’s when I started learning about heavy bullets and better BC; it’s been a lot of learning.
