Many of you know I built a 300 Lapua Imp thinking there would be 245s out by now.... Well, that didn’t happen. But Sierra did come out with a 230 Match King that is very slippery. I bought a couple hundred to see how they shot out of the rifle. After a few trips to the range, I had little doubt about the accuracy but needed to stretch it out to see if the .800 BC was embellished or true. Well, two trips to my favorite rock canyon and I was very confident the BC was on point as the young kids say. But I still wondered how it would perform on game.
After the draws came out a good buddy Jim Carr asked if I would go on a hunt with him and his brother. He had drawn an early rifle mule deer tag and wanted some help spotting and long-range shooting could be a factor. I said yes, under the condition that he would use my rifle
Two days into the hunt I spot a group of bucks. I mean a gaggle of bucks. Never in my life have I seen this much velvet on one hillside. The problem was almost everyone was a little guy with a few 150-160 mixed in. After watching them for a few minutes I spotted a buck with a much larger frame than the rest but the mirage was killing me. He was big enough for a closer look. While trying to get above the bucks they spooked a bunch of does that, of course, ran right into the gaggle of bucks. Luckily the big buck was one of the lowest bucks on the hillside and last to find out danger was coming. As soon as they knew the doe had bust them they laid down on this huge rock outcropping and let the Sig Kilo do its work. 590 yards with a good downhill angle of 18 degrees. They dial up a few Mils. Lucky(yep his nickname is Lucky) found the big buck in his scope on alert and ready to bolt. Pulled the trigger and made a perfect shot right behind the shoulder. Now I’m watching all this go down from a crossed the canyon, it was awesome.
Now for the bullet, it left the rifle at 3155. It pencil hole in between two ribs took out both lungs. One lung had a fair bit of damage the other was liquified. Breaking three ribs on the exit leaving a large baseball size hole. The buck ran about 30 yards down hill and piled up.
I know this is a sample size of one but you have to start somewhere..... on to elk very soon.
Exit hole
