    DIY fire starters

Not really a DIY, but I use those Rutland smoker starters (there are tons of brands). Essentially they're a 2"x2"x.25" square of wax infused compressed paper dust. I cut each one into 3 or 4 strips so it works out to about $.10/per and they burn for about 5 minutes. If you scrape it with your...

    Sauer 100 Experiences?

It's almost Halloween, so I thought I'd revive this dead thread. The Sauer 100 barrel isn't pressed in, it's threaded. So you can replace the barrel - though I haven't found any for it yet...(I have a Sauer 100 in 270 Winchester)...

What’s does your fitness routine look like to get in(and stay in) elk hunting shape?

I'm in terrible shape, so I wont give fitness advice... but I will 100% endorse this. I've transitioned between sea-level and high altitude hundreds of times in my life, and even when I was in the best shape of my life, going to altitude, particularly 8K and above is NO joke. If you cannot...

    Getting together gear

I like my mini too... it's also helpful if you hunt with a partner, as you can message each other and share your location when you split up. I imagine other GPS communicators can do something similar, so I don't think everyone has to be on the same device/service to accomplish this.

    .270 Elk bullet choice - 145 ELD-X or 130 GMX?

My brother-in-law uses the ELD-X in his 270 Win Tikka... and I use the GMX in my 270 Win Sauer 100... I wish I could tell you which kills better, but for 3 years in a row we haven't seen anything to shoot at :D

    Snow in 3 season tent

It depends on the tent and the type of snow... some tents support more weight than others, and if the snow is wet and heavy it's obviously going to be a lot harder than some light fluffy stuff you might get in CO or UT. I've been snowed on in some basic REI tents, a Kelty, and an off brand 6...

    Foam + air pad

I have and will continue to pack in a closed cell foam pad with my insulated air pad. I had my air pad fail on my first backcountry hunt a few years ago, and I was lucky my brother-in-law had brought a spare foam pad that we left in the truck. When my pad failed I freaking FROZE. I hiked the...

    Active Fleece Mid Layer

Check out the Eddie Bauer High Route Grid Fleece - it's basically an affordable Patagonia R1. It's one of their technical line items and it's awesome. EB runs really good sales this time of year, and I just picked up another one of these for $40. It's a grid fleece with a smooth outer. It...

Tikka T3X Hunter Stainless .270 factory ammo recommendations

My brother-in-law has a T3X Stainless Superlite that loves Hornady ELD-X in 145gr. He shoots sub MOA with it. Unfortunately, that's pricey stuff but it works great for him. I don't have a Tikka, but my Sauer 100 likes Hornady GMX 130gr Full Boar and Outfitter (I haven't tried the Superformance...

    What knife does everyone carry?

I edc a SOG Terminus XR in D2 steel. I really like it. But when I go out hunting, I carry a fixed blade and a folder... Either a KaBar Becker BK16 or a Mora Garberg for fixed, and a Rat 1 or KaBar Dozier.

    Hot weather camping solutions?

You might want to check out Borah Gear. John will customize your order for just a little more, and he does great work. His bug bivy starts at like $75, and I doubt it would be too much more to customize it. I've got an ultralight bivy from him that he added some width to for me because I'm...

If you could only have 1 rimfire rifle

I love my T1X in 17HMR. I have a basic Vortex Crossfire II in 2-7x32, and it shoots like a dream.

    Pad for quilts

Thermarest recently updated the NeoAir Xlite and it's got a listed R value of 4.2 now. Which is pretty awesome for a 12oz pad.
