Hunters are reminded to call the Fortymile Caribou Herd Hotline (907) 267-2310 for updates about the hunt quota and bag limit before departing for the field to learn of zone closures.
This would be more of a Trooper question (and you may get different answers), what does departing for the...
Vern is correct. I would expect Steese area to be open for caribou for only a few hours before they close it. If you dont have one down within a few hours of day light make sure you call hotline before you pull the trigger.
2rocky would be correct.
All depends on the bears coming into site and the surrounding area.
If the area is dense with vegetation and the black bears feel they can escape before attacked they will stay around. One site I has black bears and grizzlies tag teaming the site. I mean after 5...
Caribou Gear, Tag, Argali are the bags I use. Different sizes for whatever hunt I'm on.
Bone in - 28x60 bags for quarters (ribs if required) and some other smaller bags for other meat.
Deboned - This year I'm running Argali high country bags 17x29. This is for backpack hunting.
I bought 1" webbing strap roll and cut a section of it to the length I wanted. Burn the ends and add buckle. Off of the same roll I made my hunting partner a belt too. Feels great under pack and it is running strong after 4 years of use.
Will always have binos, weapon and tags.
Everything else depends on location, hunt type, weather and if with another hunter.
A drop camp I would stay within a few miles of base camp. Packing a moose out more than 2 miles is a huge effort. Try to call moose in closer to camp, if in mid to late...
44 Mag is very nice, no complaints. I use it mostly for Bear stand hunting and anything under a few days. For stand hunting I like that I can unzip the top to be able to get into pack and all pockets.
If I am doing a backpack hunt I use a bigger bag that weighs less.
-Find a boot you want to try, research if they fit small or large, order what you normally wear and a size up or down from your research.
-Return the pair that doesn't fit right out of box.
-Wear the pair that fits out of box for a few miles on a treadmill and see how they feel. Make a decision...
My personnel opinion when I had the hunter frame I could not get it to be very comfortable. I got the duplex lite frame last year and it is the most comfortable frame I have run. I have used and sold Stone glacier and EXO K3 also.
I do not hunt moose in a unit with on bone requirements. So I guess it all depends on where you are hunting, however, I would not want to pack out a hind quarter bone on more then 1/2 or even 1 mile.
I always try to butcher with gutless method. Ribs off bones you just cut them out with extra...
How long will you be hunting?
I normally run "gortex" like rain gear, however, I can pull out or make a fire to dry everything. If you are not hiking a lot go with rubber rain gear for a drop camp.
I use a havalon and one fixed blade for moose. I have only needed a saw to remove antlers from...
It all depends...
The only "solid" rain gear is the rubber stuff, however, I will not hike with that stuff on.
For normal wet weather (no kodiak weather) I would say the FirstLite SEAK is good to go if you already have it. I am running Seak jacket and Kuiu Katana pants for most all hunts.
I...
