I camp down into the -30C temps a few times a year, a mix of backpacking and horse camping. I run a lite outdoors tipI with stove and liner a Taiga works down bag -20 c rated. Then I sleep in my puffy layer and base layers with OR booties and I do fine. Thermarest Xtherm NXT R7.3.

That defiantly can be a problem for some but if you can't seem to treat them to keep the leather from repelling water you have wet feet either way. Having tried both I will take gortex and dampness from sweat as opposed to dumping water out of my boot and not being able to dry them for 10 days.
For the last three years I have been running through a set of boots nearly every 10 - 12 months before the gortex liner is failing in various spots. I do a good job of keeping them treated with wax based creams but once the liner fails I can’t keep my feet dry. I have tried a few different...

There is times of the year I leave it at home but those are the early or short trips...
If your starting fresh my vote would be a 2 person tent with a fast and light pitch option (floor and fly). In late season or bug season you have a full shelter and if you want to go light you can shave weight.
I am a person that never goes into the bush without a tarp in my pack so I accept...
