    Feedback on backcountry elk loadout

I like the list and many of the suggestions. I do multiple trips in the Utah and Colorado mountains every year. As said, the things that stand out to me - heavy tripod, heavy powerbank, heavy sleeping bag. I like a lighter 15 degree down bag (lighter and more compact) and down puffy pants (which...

    Whhat to do?

Sounds like you’re shooting whitetails. A .45 would be fine. Bh209 and Fury bullets are great choices. But, I don’t see any advantage to a Variflame. BH209 likes mag 209s.

I do the same exact thing.

    CVA MUZZEL LOADER SAFE?

No issues with Bh209. There are thousands of guys shooting Bh209 in Optimas. But, you will need a Blackhorn specific breech plug.

    Bighorn Sheep Tag Process

I think it’s a little too complicated (draws, raffles, MX hunts) to be explained to a 5 year old. 🤣

Talk Me Out of a Knight Mountaineer

And with a Patriot you could shoot light smokeless loads if you wanted to. Much more versatile option.

Talk Me Out of a Knight Mountaineer

There’s no recoil difference between a .50 and .45 (all else being equal). Felt recoil is mostly bullet weight, powder charge and rifle weight. There aren’t currently any .45 non-lead full-bore conical options. Although Thor is supposed to be bringing a .45 out this year. Most guys are...

CVA MR-X 1 in 28 inch bullet weight

Yeah, you’ll just have to try it and see. The 300 gr Thor is likely on the edge lengthwise of what will shoot well in a 28 twist. I’d use a stout a load of powder as you can handle (that will shoot acceptable groups). I’m not saying you need to go that high, but 150 gr volume is the max 777 charge.

CVA MR-X 1 in 28 inch bullet weight

It is certainly true that with longer (heavier) bullets you generally need a faster twist. The 1:28 is the standard in the factory .50s and many .45 muzzies. Although many of us are finding that faster twists are much more versatile. The White muzzleloaders all had faster than standard twists...

Is the Expen$$$ive Turkey ammo worth it?

Hmmm……I’d probably keep that to myself….lol

Is the Expen$$$ive Turkey ammo worth it?

That’s like saying you aren’t really bowhunting elk if you shoot them at 50 yards (instead of calling them to 5 yards)….😉

    Camera Batteries

Depends on the camera. Some models draw more power when sitting idle and use more on nighttime pics. I’ve had two Spypoints out over this winter (4 months) that are still showing 30-40% battery. My Brownings will run out of memory (128 Gb) long before the batteries run out. I generally run a...
