We ended up hunting around 7,000 feet and saw plenty of deer but nothing big. We found some really nice bulls but we didn’t have elk tags. The bigger bucks seemed to be up high yet when we were there.
Early next week we are leaving to mule deer hunt the Northern portion of 49. Our original plan was to camp at 8,400 ft and hunt 8,000-9,000 ft. Does anyone have a higher elevation snow report for the area (I’m told 6-8” at the trailhead at 6,800 ft) and has this weather pushed some of these deer...

Our group took 4 mule deer last year during peak rut in Montana and all 4 tasted just fine. We are used to eating whitetails that feed in crop fields in the Midwest and while the mule deer weren’t quite as good as the Midwest whitetails, they still tasted plenty good. I will say the rutted up...
I’ve been really impressed with First Lite’s Sawbuck brush pant. The material is lightweight and flexible and doesn’t fight movement. They have held up well in cattails, crop fields, and CRP but I have yet to get them into anything real thorny. Not sure they would be durable enough to hunt...
