    Feedback on backcountry elk loadout

I like your attitude. Previous experience doing this is a giant plus. Good luck to you both.

    Feedback on backcountry elk loadout

I was thinking about this a little more. Do you both have tags? One bull down will be 3 round trips, at least. That is 42 miles unless the kill is between camp and your vehicle. 2 bulls down? That is a lot of miles. You will have earned every ounce of elk if you guys pull that off.

That seven miles better be ALL downhill to the truck. The return trip to camp for another load, with an empty pack, will seem like child's play. I hope you are successful, because I want to hear this story.

    Javelina Thread

Aim farther forward than you think. I hit my first javelina with a bow a little farther behind the shoulder and chased him around for a while. Glad PETA doesn't have a video of that rodeo. Lot's of fun.

First hunt in New Mexico was a success

Nice buck! That area between Clayton and Raton is one of my favorite drives.

    NE Wyoming Car Thieves!

Sorry, was not very clear. They did not get my son's truck , but they got in and took a Glock 19 and a radar detector. If the keys had been in it, they could have driven away. The police did say that 13 F150s had been stolen at a very large, high-end shopping center in one day (The Shops at La...

    NE Wyoming Car Thieves!

It happened to my sons F150 in a parking lot with security cameras in San Antonio. I have seen the video. It happens so often law enforcement will not even respond. On it's way to Mexico before they can get there.

Unless something has changed with the locking mechanism in the last few years, I can get into any newer model Ford truck with a pair of channel lock pliars in less than 20 seconds. If your keys are in it anywhere, I am driving off with it.

    Hypothetical Ethics Question

In 1989 I went bowhunting in New Mexico with a group of 5 other hunters; all friends at that time. Myself and 2 other guys had Mule Deer tags and 2 other guys had any-sex elk tags. Two guys said they were just going for the fun of it. The first day one of the guys shot a cow elk (almost in...

    Backcountry hunt pack weight

I have always said you can always tell experienced backpackers from rookies. Rookies are always looking for something to put in their packs. The pros are always looking for something to take out. 40lbs for me on a 5-7 day backpack hunt, usually in September with water available nearby.

Donating Blood - Why? Why not?

10+ gallon donor and work in a hospital laboratory, I do not think they are letting HIV+ persons give blood but are considering letting gay males donate. I do not care about the science behind this, I completely disagree with this. I've worked in the lab 35+ years, very familiar with HIV...

Your longest pack out by foot?

Was caribou hunting in Quebec in 1996. It was a 5 day hunt and it was 1 guide for 4 hunters. My guide was assigned 3 older hunters from Tennessee and I was 36 at the time. Everybody had 2 tags and was encouraged to shoot a bull early and look for a big one for the 2nd tag if that is what you...

Training a bird dog at 5?

Pheasant hunted in Kansas last year. The dog handler brought the usual assortment of labs and pointers. But, included in this mix of 5-6 dog, was an older border collie: his wife's pet. Several years before, he had brought the dog on a hunt just to get him out of the house and he picked up...
