To Outfitters: Help me to be a better client

Never heard of Cliff Grey before. Seems like a great guy. But I have to disagree with him a bit. He said that people who have a tough life turn into “bitches” and the CEOs and people with secretaries and assistants do better. I think it’s the opposite. I’ll take a blue collar worker over someone...

Elk hunting the Bob Marshall wilderness

Exactly! Too many guys, especially after striking out with an outfitter, think they can’t do it on their own. My first two hunts were guided. The first was archery. I saw one cow and killed nothing. The second was rifle. I saw zero elk. My third hunt was a DIY gun hunt and I killed a nice 5...

Elk hunting the Bob Marshall wilderness

Jack321 after reading your last PM you should ask people on here what your chances are of EVER drawing a Wyoming unit 7 bull license. You could kill half a dozen… or a dozen bulls in Wyoming before that is even close to happening. And that sir is no exaggeration.

    Boning out vs not

That’s right it’s not like a bone is made of lead. There aren’t enough advantages to dropping a few pounds.

Elk hunting the Bob Marshall wilderness

K You are believing what you want to believe. The more you research outfitters the wiser you will get. I got your PM. The first of three outfitters you listed offers Colorado rifle hunts during the rut. Up to $19,000. That has high fence written all over it. He has several properties. But I...

    Fall elk hunt cancellations !

This holds true for lots of things. Hunter pressure. Flocks of sheep or grazing cattle. The elk have to be somewhere. If something is running them out of one area there will be even more elk somewhere else. If you’re going to hunt elk you have to learn to find positive things about everything.

Hearing Bugles from On-Trail vs. Off-Trail

Being off trail doesn’t mean bushwhacking or being in deadfall. I can cover just as much ground off of trails. My answer would be that hunters are more successful once they learn their area. If you’re buried in blowdowns you did something wrong.

    Boning out vs not

Have you considered the other pros and cons of boning our or not? Boning out creates 10 times the surface area exposed to dirt and bacteria. It also results in much more meat loss because of additional trimming. Eliminating the weight of a bone isn’t worth that to me. I’d never bone out my...

    First Archery Elk Hunt

With those constraints just hunt as late as you can. It’s that simple.

Agreed! That is a HUGE red flag. I probably would scratch a guy off the list for telling me that.

Elk hunting the Bob Marshall wilderness

Who the heck told you that!!!!! Maybe on private land. Maybe! If you’re talking DIY OTC you better get input from someone else. That’s not realistic most anywhere let alone CO OTC. Not even close.

The Bob Marshall! Lol! Go read that thread! Try either Yellowstone Outfitters or Twin Peak Outfitters both in Wyoming.

    dream elk hunt

You probably don’t have the points to do that. Maybe. I’d do a Wyoming wilderness hunt. But pick the right outfitter. You’ll need a good 7 or 8 grand plus license, travel, and tips. If I was planning a “dream hunt” I would have been doing it more than 5 months before it’s time to apply for a...
