What I learned my first Kodiak blacktail hunt

The microspikes I’d agree are priceless in that terrain. Next time I’m going to take a spare pair for the group just in case someone breaks or loses one.

    Guided fall bear options?

A friend tore his ACL and caused us to move our Kodiak deer hunt back to a later year. I’m looking for options on what to do instead this fall and guided black bear is one option. I’m good with hunting over bait or with hounds. Anyone have any outfitters they’d recommend? I’m making a list...

What I learned my first Kodiak blacktail hunt

I’m headed back to try a boat hunt with some friends in November. Maybe I’ll have another article to share if it makes a good story.

Latest version of my perfect poncho/tarp shelter

I’d go 112” x 66” if I was making one. Add 2 loops like the sheep tarp or I added to elevate the tarp on the ends in the cave configuration. I have an old Pathfinder poncho thats a 7.5” square that works well too, makes a plow point that’s just big enough to work well. Its a heavier material...

Latest version of my perfect poncho/tarp shelter

I have the MyTrailCo poncho. It’s nice, but a little small as a shelter in my opinion. The extra 6” of length on this new one makes a difference.

    Tripod or No Tripod?

For day hunting I like the Primos Rapid Pivot bipod. I can quickly pop it off the mount on my rifle if I need to, but I can also shoot confidently to 250 yards from it. Prone isn't an option most places I hunt, but I keep the prone model in my pack as well. If that situation presents itself...

6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

I've had really good performance from the 90gr accubond on deer and coyotes. It's a great bullet.

The do it all self-defense pistol

If concealed carry isn't an issue I'd have to pick my S&W 386XL Hunter in 357. It's what I carry a lot in the woods in the lower 48. It's basically a lighter 686 7 shot. I can use a lot of different ammo types and it seems to put them all pretty close to the same spot. I mainly carry 158gr...

    Best Puffy?

I have not had that problem with the Kuiu Superdown Pro jacket or pants. I also have an old Marmot puffy I've had for years I got for $80 off Ebay that has worked really well. I've worn it for work and it's seen a lot of use in the winter, but usually under a shell.

    What predator call to buy?

My buddy I hunt with got a Lucky Duck because I had a Foxpro. Between us we figured we had more variety. I much prefer the TX 1000 remote on the Foxpro, but the sounds on the Lucky Duck are great too. I've added a lot of sounds to my Foxpro over the years to improve our variety. I'm in...

Anyone have a tricked out .22 pistol they hunt squirrels with.

Got a call from the gunsmith, he has the Volquartsen trigger kit in my 22/45 Lite. I'm looking forward to a 2.5lb trigger so the dot doesn't move around so much when I'm trying to squeeze the trigger. I hope to get time to pick it up today.
