    Best Puffy jacket???

This is what I’m doing. This year I’ve been using my Uncompahgre vest with the Klamath grid fleece over the top. Surprised at how quiet it has been for bow hunting.

2022 Best Whitetail Hunt Photo Contest, Sponsored by First Lite

Western OK. Been in a serious slump since 2018. Shot over this guy on Sunday, 11/13/22, with my bow while tucked up next to a tiny cedar tree when he was chasing a hot doe. Saw the arrow appear to graze his back, but couldn’t be sure. Clean miss is all I knew. Fast forward to Saturday, 11/19/22...

Grunt calls- How not to get winded

If grunting is working, try a decoy. Set it up with the wind in your favor if he circles the decoy. Doesn’t have to be fancy, the Montana 2D decoys will work and are more packable than 3D style decoys.

    Virginia mountain buck.

Awesome buck, man! I’m from flat land with big deer but our annual deer camp is in the national forest mountains. The majestic landscape in combination with low deer density followed by lack of human population makes it my favorite place to hunt whitetails. There is no ag where we hunt, so...

    Whitetail Rut Sock Recommendation

As others have stated, a second dry pair of socks for once you reach your destination are a necessity for me. I use smartwool and darn tough midweight. Put the sweaty pair in a ziplock and loosen your boot laces. If it’s really cold I’ll put a stick on toe warmer in my boots.

    Whitetail pants

Personally, I didn’t care for my North Branch set. Too hot for me to hike with, and not enough wind blocking or insulation once stationary. I tend to bring other layers for those purposes. I have the FL Obsidians and Prana Zions which would be similar to the FL Corrugate pants. I like the...

    Late Season Bucks?

I am hunting as well as I got a late start on my season. Find the preferred food sources then find the bedding areas adjacent to the food. Hunt the anticipated bedding exit/entrance direction towards the food you’ve found. It’s an oversimplification, but calories are king right now.

    Public Land NE Oklahoma

Look up “The Hunting Public” on YouTube. Regular guys that show you how anyone can have success on public land. Definitely don’t need a stand or blind, although it is an advantage in certain situations. I’ve killed one deer from the ground with a bow and have had several other close encounters...

    Backpack?

I use the Mystery Ranch pop up 28. Can stick all my stuff in the main compartment and heavy layers on the load shelf. If you need to carry a stand or sticks the load shelf works for that, too. If carrying a stand you can lash you clothing to the pack with bungees. Same goes for meat hauling if...

Insulation for stand hunting. Bibs or pants

Sub freezing stationary sits = Sanctuary bibs for me. The solitude doesn’t quite cut it under 32°. The solitude does cover me over a wider range of temperatures and if upsized could work with more layering. That being said, I can’t imagine taking either out west. I believe if you get something...

    Good, warm clothes

Find some puffy type pants, ski or otherwise, on sale (Sierra Trading, eBay, etc) and a jacket to match. They’ll usually block some wind with their shell as well. Get an ASAT leafy suit or similar to go over. They weight nothing. Bow or rifle? Cheap, good, and camo don’t usually go together in...
