    .243 deer bullet choice

    They are small but it creates a hole bigger than the 180's I shot out of my 30-06. I used to use various 30 cal cartridges but we use 6.5 and 6mm almost exclusively now. Far more enjoyable to go shoot 100 rounds out of these. Good luck

    I picked the unit I hunt based on being able to get a tag every year. The better you know a unit the more success you have. Being in an excellent unit doesn't matter if you don't know where the deer are.

    Awesome old buck. I would guess 8 by the teeth alone. What did the taxidermist guess? It would be worth sending in either way. I've only killed a few bucks that had teeth that looked like that. All were on the decline (personal opinion) of horn growth. Congratulations on getting a cagey old deer.

    Calling Bears in Montana

    I have run into too many griz in eastern idaho to be comfortable calling. I've never been scared of black bear but the first time you have a 1,000lb griz warn you is the last time you want that to happen. I'm also not too keen on bringing in cats.

    Help me pick a scope or two

    I have a high end scope on my long gun too, but my wife has used mid range Leopold scopes for years now and they work great in low light for $800 ish scopes. If you aren't dialing and not shooting far that is the route I would go. I put a 4-10 on a 30-06 and have never needed anything nicer on it.

    I think the hardest part of wolves is the inability to manage them. Here in WI and neighboring MN they have devastated deer herds in the north.     Excellent footwear and more training then seems necessary will help with getting around. Onx helped a lot. Ross gave some great advice. Shocking how many more animals I saw once I got comfortable hiking in the dark.

    Black bears have never really bothered me. Other than a sow with cubs they run 99.9% of the time. Grizzly can be aggressive. I hunt near both.
