What rifle am I trying to buy?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest a 308. The 150-grain Barnes TTSX has killed enough elk that that there's no disputing how well it works, and you can handload it fast and flatten out the trajectory enough to get you well past any reasonable range. As for the rifle, I bought a used Tikka...

Gunsmith time estimates and etiquette questions

I've learned three things in nearly 30 years of dealing with gunsmiths. First, you can usually rely on their estimates for price, but never rely on their time estimates. Too many things can and do happen. Second, don't plan a hunt around a rifle until that rifle is in your hands and shooting...

    Buying/Selling/Shipping Firearms without FFL

I'm fortunate enough to live near several dealers who will ship and receive for me. I also spend a lot in each of their shops. If any of them were to give me a hard time about it, I'd take my business down the road. I prefer to use a dealer to ship and to receive. I get the impression that the...

Tikka t3 hunter in 300 win mag

The 300 WSM makes a lot of sense in the Tikka because their actions are all the same length. Just swap in a bolt stop and magazine for the longer cartridges and you're set. Even with a McMillan stock, Talley rings, and Leupold glass you could still come in well under $2,500. Okie John

    First Elk, First Roosevelt

Until 2016, I had a perfect record on Roosevelt elk: I got skunked every time I hunted them. But Paul Ockerman and Roosevelt Elk Outfitters (http://rooseveltelkoutfitters.com/ and Search) helped me change all of that. Once I turned 55, I realized that I have maybe 10-15 years of big-game...

    Elk hunting area specific gear

It's easy to think of the PNW as a giant forest, but it's not. For every patch of timber we have, you can turn around and see across miles of clear cuts. It's possible to hunt only the timber, but you'll do a lot better if you hunt where the timber meets the clearcuts, and a spotting scope is...

    Blacktail hunting help.

I've hunted them in Washington state for 25 years. If you get the chance to hunt them anywhere else, take it. The brush is thick and wet here. Plenty of folks kill them with a bow, but basically, you shoot the first one you see or you go home empty-handed. I have friends in Oregon who've hunted...

    FNG from Washington State

I’m a seasoned shooter but I’m old-school. I grew up shooting 4-position smallbore, NRA High Power Rifle, and NRA Bullseye pistol. I was a 95B and an 11B in the Oklahoma National Guard for three years. Then I went active duty, serving as an 18C for six years on A-detachments in 1st SFG(A) and...
