    I did a training run this weekend with 3 of the boys on a pretty tough trail in Mammoth CA they did great ( i was sucking wind going over the pass)

    Tobe-B Are you the outfitter with the pack horses What do you use as a breakaway for the horses I use a loop of 550 cord on the back of each saddle in case of a wreck i can quickly cut the paracord and not have to cut the lead ropes .

    The first 4 miles of that trail is tough and very technical when leading a string of 6 llamas with all the boulders and cliffs that you have to climb and pass , the whole time thinking my string is over 60' long and I know what the first one is doing but what if one in the back steps off there...

    Like Squirrel has said you have to train any packer or person that goes into the backcountry Not sure 10,000 was moderate elevation for me Coming from 200' elevation He hunted up around 13.500' so 10,000 was a walk in the park I went up to 12,200 and wasn't ready for it

    Had four 3.5 year olds girls out for a weekend trip with the family on a 6.5 mile hike each way up and over three mountains on a very hard trail of granite boulders , llamas where great going up and down the polished granite and jumping boulder to boulder like a goat

    You should start training them on a low line I think you will find more areas that a low line will be the only option and they need to learn how to get untangled Here are 2 that i just picked up they were already halter trained and i started on day 1 with a blanket than walking with saddles on...

    Get the saddles on them as soon as you can just tie them out in the yard with the saddles on the ground next to them for a couple hours so they get use to it Then put the saddles on them while they are tied up in the yard and just let them eat for a couple hours then start doing training hikes...
