Ticks - Blacktail in CA and PNW

What I have been told from a couple doctors is that the info you presented if for a known or suspected case (positive test, bullseye rash, joint pain, fever following a bite, etc.). At that point, the 10-14 day treatment (some say 21 days, I understand) is absolutely the right course. What I...

Ticks - Blacktail in CA and PNW

Get a prescription for doxycycline from your doc. If you get a tick bite, take 2 pills and it can knock out any incoming Lyme's infections. I just asked for a bottle as a prophylactic and my doctor prescribed me 20 or so. I've had occasion to dose twice since then, but it really give me peace...

    Alpine Hiking on Kodiak

It looked to me like the high alpine lakes were likely too small to land a plane on, but perhaps I'm mistaken. If that's an option, it makes the choice much easier. Sounds like my next task is call the flight services and ask them about all the options.

    Elk Parasites

I've seen this in deer. They eat just fine after freezing, and the critters can't parasitize people.

Best All Copper Cartridge for Elk & Whitetail Deer for a Tikka T3 .270?

Another vote for the 130 gr. TTSX. Only ever recovered one bullet from game and it was picture perfect. Mostly get pass-throughs with plenty of damage.

    Alpine Hiking on Kodiak

Thanks everybody, this is really helping things come together in the early planning stages. Movi, interesting to hear you think the terrain is easier on Kodiak than elsewhere. I've hunting Utah, Arizona, Montana, and some of the roughest stuff in California and was expecting Kodiak to be tougher!

    Alpine Hiking on Kodiak

Ah, planning on late August/early September, so freeze up is pretty unlikely that time of year. If that's still a major risk that early, that definitely affects the plans!

    Alpine Hiking on Kodiak

Thanks for the info! not sure on location yet, and the answer to this question might affect that. The south side of the island for sure, but still haven't made a decision on landing on a lake or in the salt. If you've got ideas on general areas, feel free to PM, but I don't want to steal...

    Alpine Hiking on Kodiak

Planning a hunt in 2023 on Kodiak Island and am running into a question that effects camp planning: How long would you expect a strong, but not herculean, hiker to go from a camp around 500 feet in elevation to the tree line around 1800 feet or so on Kodiak island? How about from sea level...

Im scared of blowing myself up with reloads

I work for accuracy first too. If I'm struggling, I try different powders and seating depths before switching bullets, but any change of any type can make or break an accurate load. I once switched a primer on a very accurate load when I couldn't find the preferred ones and accuracy went out...

    False property Lines

Good point about east vs. west on fence placement. All my experience with hunting around boundaries has been Rockies and points west.

    False property Lines

A lot of fences, especially in rough country, are fences of convenience, not boundaries. I try to respect the ones that are pretty close in case its a case of poor data from the county, but if its way off, I just assume some lazy cowboy threw it up a long time ago where it was easy or land...

Do you guys carry bear spray in Black Bear country?

Just looked it up and I stand corrected! Interesting. Probably still won't carry bear spray in black bear country, as I usually have a tag in my pocket anyway, but something to think about.

Im scared of blowing myself up with reloads

I've had bad primers in factory ammo on more than one occasion. So far so good on handloads, but I shoot a lot more volume of factory pistol ammo than rifle handloads. I'm meticulous about not touching primers--I just dump them into the auto primer and the contraption does all the touching for...

Do you guys carry bear spray in Black Bear country?

Not for black bears, Most are big wusses. Those that aren't are mostly just curious or want to eat your garbage. There are fatalities from black bears now and again, so I don't judge those that do. The odds say you are more likely to fall and get hurt or killed out in the woods than get...
