2018 Turkey Meatpole ---Lets get this started

This bike is primarily meant to be for bikepacking but was built with local trail riding, commuting, and mostly bird hunting in mind. Frame is a Surly Ogre. It accommodates 27.5 plus tires (I went with 3 inch tires on a 50mm rim) and comes loaded with places to mount things. I run a Surly Nice...

Cleaning and making an older rifle hunting ready.

Thank you for the detailed response, it is exactly what I was hoping for. Scope mounts are Leupold Detacho's and scope is a Weaver K4 60-B. I'm not 100% opposed to changing these, but I do plan on trying them out to maintain the character of the rifle if possible.

Cleaning and making an older rifle hunting ready.

Let me start by saying that I know next to nothing about firearms, their care, and really have a youtube level knowledge of rifle cleaning. I recently inherited a rifle built by a family member sometime in the (late?) 1950's. Rifle is a rebuilt Mauser. Caliber is 280 Remington. From what I can...

Staph infections are no joke on a back country hunt

Whether I'm backpacking or hunting I always keep some betadine solution in a small bottle along with my normal first aid kit. I've had too many close calls with infection to ignore the potential downsides. I once had a heel blister land me in the ER when after only 24 hours there was an...

    Games to pass the time?

Hangman, but where all the words have to do with something that happened in the day. It passes the time and creates a nice record of the memories.

Anyone looking forward to 17-18 upland season?

I'm so ready for some birds this year. Grouse opener for me is in two days. I've got some high country grouse and some desert quail on my mind.

New Mexico Archery Elk: Day-by-day format

Really appreciate this closer look format. The detail is crucial for someone in my shoes. I've discovered hunting in my 30's and appreciate any genuine lived examples I can get. Thanks for taking the deep dive on this one.

    Which Bike?

Revelate frame bags are sold directly to surly and they will have a "custom" fit for your Krampus. I found this site really helpful: Complete Guide to Bikepacking Bags - BIKEPACKING.com Since your older Krampus won't have places to mount a rack on the back(as far as I can tell) you may want...

    Late Season Cow Hunts

We have two late season cow hunts in my house this year. One is in Northern New Mexico and the other is in Southern New Mexico. We have only recently taken a crack at elk hunting and have, as of yet, been unsuccessful. What kind of advice would you give for a late season cow hunt? Deep snow...

Looking for ideas for stops on family vacation

I just did a fast whirlwind western tour of Co, WY, and UT. It was done without kids but while visiting Dinosaur National Monument I realized how cool I would have found it as a child. If your kids like dinosaurs it may be worth a stop if you're nearby. Fossils are all on the Utah side though.

    Which Bike?

Any chance you're shop has some demos you could ride? With the plus tires you'll probably get away with tire pressures in the low teens and with the 29 x 2.5 maybe around 20 PSI. You'll benefit from surface area and added traction of a plus tire on a climb. I'm not sure to what extent though. I...

    Which Bike?

For a 27.5 + build on the Ogre you will be out the cost of plus size wheels/tires and you will need to add a Surly offset double crankset/BB combo(maybe $650 or so extra) to make it work. Compared to the Karate Monkey you will also have a lower bottom bracket which means your ride may feel more...
