Check out--- "The Alaska Outdoor Podcast" with Alaska guide Phil Shoemaker. He used a 9mm to defend a client, that had a grizz standing over. Phil talks about what bullets to use. He used DoubleTap hard cast to kill that grizz. Lots of good info in the podcast.
Highlights are use...
There are great examples of successful defense with spray. I live within 100 miles of 2 of the below attcks and 175 from the other. There are other examples from a quick google search. I have had to put 2 bears down that were nuisance bears, one black and one grizz. I personally don't own...
Add Red Ram to the list, I have had most listed above and more that I cant think of for the life of me. In recent times I just buy whats on sale. I have ordered some from one of the Scandinavian countries, pardon my spelling ---Versllica. I haven't had it long enough to give an opinion other...
I have had good weight in the bag but not rear quarter kind of weight. I have the Yukon and a buddy has the Pinnacle, he has put meat in his pack and not complained. I prefer the ease of the meat shelf. I lay the cordage/straps on the ground then the quarter and the bag on top, tie everything...
For me the meat shelf is a must. Ratchet straps, 550 cord, Jute have all worked securing quarters/game bags to the frame. I have the Yukon bag but haven't put meat in it, I also use contractors' bags over the game bags.
Billy Molls has a youtube bag review and one is the Barney's. Most...
I stopped in to Barney’s today, What a great crew to speak with they are top notch. I looked at the Kifaru, Stone Glacier and Barney’s. I left with a fitted Barney’s Yukon. Stoked to use it on this falls moose and sheep hunts.
Feels great to support a local Alaskan business.
Not a PRC but I used the 6.5 GAP (SAUM based) and shot 3 with the Barnes 127 LRX and 1 with the Lapua 139 Scenar and continue to use the 6.5 GAP. Avatar has one on the 127 LRX kills. A buddy also shoots a 6.5 GAP but shoot the Berger 140 hybrid he has no complaints. Neither one of us has 156...
I meet Coke Wallace out of Healy a few years back. Had a good conversation with him, struck me as a solid person. He hunts just outside Denali National Park. I frequent Healy fairly often and look forward to speaking with him again. A while back I heard Coke on the Tundra Talk podcast. Good...
I live pretty close to the Alaska/Yukon border. As far as topography they are very similar, and prior to Covid I spent a good amount of time in the Yukon. Either place I think you will be in for a hunt of a lifetime. Covid protocol may be your biggest challenge, pending your citizenship and...
Boiler room/double lung puts them down archery or centerfire. Hydraulic shock/wave will put them down fast cruising though the chest. I always cringe when i see the heart damaged, I dont like missing out on that meal. All of us that have had to wade in the water to recover the beast try not...
I didn’t mean not to try for CNS, the fact they are moving and the victim will be moving, difficult to say the least.
How many maulings/attacks do you hear happening here in Alaska? May be more than you think, in my area only bear attacks that make the news is when human death has occurred...
