I think it does work just fine, but I don't look at this "solution" as comparable to a decent ground-up design. I look at it more as a "hack that works"
For an 18 (and even a 15), going with 56mm would be a better pairing than a 50mm objective. With a 50mm paired with the 18x, the exit pupil would be tiny (less than 3mm), and barely usable at dusk.
Thanks for returning back to your thread, and providing an update. I personally am debating between the Zeiss Conquest 15x56, the Swaro SLC 15x56 and the Maven 15x56, and thus this thread was of interest to me.
I don't think Zeiss ever marketed the SFL as their top bino. They were always positioned below the SFs. The SFL was always an Alpha-minus option from Zeiss.
Interestingly, the Zeiss SF was designed by top engineers and designers that Zeiss poached from Swarovski. And it was certainly acknowledged as being better in every way, than the Swaro ELs that came before it.
Of course the NL Pures that came years after the SFs, have bettered it in some...
If you are up for it, and don’t want to be second guessing later, I’d go for the 12x42 NL Pure, as a once-and-done purchase. The EL is a great option too, and so are the Zeiss SFs and the SFLs.
Bringing an older thread to life, but I did buy the Swarovski balance rail for my BTX/115 and there was an additional, taller, plastic arca-swiss plastic adapter in the box, and with that adapter in the slot for the smaller 65mm objective spot, the 115/BTX balances without any interference...
Agreed. You have to analyze your use-case and if the equipment you have, meets your need, just keep it. Your bank account with profusely thank you, for not depleting it.
I presume it is due to the wider FOV (477 ft at 1000 yards vs 339 ft for the 12s) and of course the lower magnification (that magnifies shake less). A better "all purpose" unit.
If they come out with a 15x NL pure, with a 50mm or 56mm objective, that’d tempt me a ton !
I am certain they’ll go for a 70+ degree AFOV like with their 12x42 NLs, and with edge-to-edge clarity, and great optics, would be a perfect complement to a 8x42 or 8x32 NL.
