Curious why so many Xmas reticle’s if everyone dials

I like the Burris G2B reticle as a do it all. When used as a FFP reticle, the heavier outer posts make it useful for low power setting, essentially making it look similar to a standard duplex reticle. On higher power, the mil dots and hashes can be used for hold over an hold off if desired.

    Projectile Choice: Lighter/Faster or Heavier/Slower

I agree with the guys who are saying look at different bullets at your maximum self imposed range. I would add to use bullets that will perform properly out to that range. That doesn't always mean the bullet with the highest ballistic coefficient. High BC means nothing if the bullet won't...

    14 NR Colorado Points

I put in with 14 NR points this year for a rifle tag that could be drawn with far fewer points in years past. My vacation time lines up perfectly this year, so, with no hope of ever drawing a better rifle hunt, I decided to quit putting it off. While I hope to shoot a nice 6x6, I'll be happy to...

    260 rem or 260 AI or a 7mm-08?

Another vote for the 7mm-08. In my opinion, it is the best all around cartridge on the .308 case. Mild recoil, but with the capability of shooting 120 to 160 grain projectiles with good velocity and trajectory.

What has actually quit on you in the field?

In the early '90's my Rem 700 30-06 wouldn't chamber my neck sized rounds on a cold rainy day. Back in 1996 on my first elk hunt in Colorado I had a Win 70 push feed .338 Win mag fail to fire due to light primer strike twice on a big cow that was part of a group of a dozen. When I tried to...

Should reloading inventory or a rokstock take priority?

Good call. I've done the same thing over the last three years. I now have equal amounts of all the components needed to load all of the cartridges I use. Guns may as well be paperweights if you don't have any ammo to shoot them with.

    Rounding out bigger caliber

How about the .416 Rem Mag? 2400 fps with 400 gr bullets, or load it with 300 to 350 gr bullets for higher velocity. I had one for a while and recoil with 400 gr Partitions at 2400 fps was not bad at all.

Learn to shoot from your weak side...

I did that two years ago during firearms season. I was set up at the edge of some cedars overlooking a field, sitting on a stool with my rifle resting on my trigger stick tripod. The deer came from the exact opposite direction I was expecting. They checked me out for a few minutes before finally...

    blew it tonite

It's sometimes hard to find the perfect tree to put a stand in when bow hunting. I have an internal debate with myself every time I hike in and do a hang and hunt on public land. Higher is always better for staying out of a deer's sight line, but sometimes not practical due to shooting lanes...

    2023 Montana alternatelist

I started at 292 and am now at 5 for the deer combo. I'm going to turn it down when I get the email. I just can't afford the $1200 or so it would cost me when I include the tag, gas from Missouri, and food. Didn't get as much overtime as I was hoping for. I will have 3 points when I apply next...

    Tracking techniques for Rocky Mountains

Good post. I use flagging ribbon or TP as well for the same reason. I also try to make every effort not to disturb any sign that I find, in case I need to come back and re-examine it.

    First post/ 10 point

Congrats! I love to see kids involved. I bet you had to get him cut up pretty quick with the warm temperature.

How many rounds do you pack in with you on a hunt?

Usually 10-15 rounds for me. Not enough extra weight to worry about but enough extra rounds to give me peace of mind. Accidental unnoticed floor plate drop, hard fall with need to verify or re-zero, wounded animal etc.

Dial vs BDC Reticle vs Holdover

I employ two different methods for different applications. I have a 257 Weatherby that, when zeroed at 300 yards is 2" high at 100 yards and 7" low at 400 yards at my normal hunting elevation of roughly 1000 ft asl in Missouri. I normally hunt the edges of crop fields, and shots are rarely over...

When you have missed an animal with archery equipment - What do you estimate the cause was?

I've experienced my share of buck fever, but I'd say that the two top culprits for my misses are poor range estimation on a moving animal and loss of proper anchor point due to holding at full draw for a long time and/or a weird shot angle.
