I know a few fellows that have taken the $6,000 - easy draw type of hunts. Mostly they were on public land and none of them came home with anything close to a 300" bull. Some had unrealistic expectations and passed on legal bulls, only to leave with nothing. A couple of guys never even saw an...
I have hunted elk on Wagonhound more than once. I would imagine that the internet board fellows that are jaded about them have never set foot on the ranch. It is a first class operation and they do have some big bulls on the ranch - however, it comes with a first class + price tag. They will...
Unless you are extremely lucky in the random, draw Wagonhound (in #7) is not going to happen with 7 points unless you buy a $20,000 license from some charity .
I have taken somewhere over 4 dozen elk over the years, mostly bulls. Unless I am in a super trophy unit with many days left to hunt I would shoot that cow with a smile on my face. In this case a cow is larger than any other elk you have ever shot. Elk meat is good.
I fly with rifle cases fairly frequently and have not been charged extra as long as they meet the airline's weight guidelines (often 50# if I am not flying First Class). My favorite is a large Tuffpak that looks almost exactly like a golf club case.
I have shot big old cows and found my solution used to be burger for everything other than the backstraps and lions. Now it is 100% burger for any big tough old cow. Burger is not a bad thing.
I bring a pillow case and stuff it with my jacket at night. A very important item is toilet paper in a zip lock bag. The bag keeps the TP dry, and wet rolls of TP are very disappointing.
New backpackers always bring too much stuff that might be needed, old backpackers only carry what they...
My favorite 280 has a 24" custom barrel and the most accurate load chronographs right at 3,000 fps with the 140 AB pushed by a reasonable amount of powder. I have another one with a 22" barrel that is a bit slower, but just over 2,950 fps.
If I was hunting heavy timber I believe that I would...
I have taken a few elk with a 160 Nosler Partition pushed by either IMR 4350 or 4831. The past few years I have been using a 140 AccuBond and IMR 4831. Both loads have shot well in my 280 Rem rifles.
