Well now I feel like I need a chap recommendation. I hope that isn’t going to derail the purpose of this thread. I guess chaps are pants in some sense.

I’ve considered them. It seems like a better option than buying new upland pants every few years. The real question is how often do you get stabbed in the back of the leg? I guess most upland pants don’t have cordura above the calf on the back side so it’s probably a non-issue.

I haven’t ever hunted in them because I’m mostly an Quail hunter and need something for the briars, but for work I’ve had good luck with Duluth Trading Co. Firehose pants. They are pretty pricey but have held up really well.

I just got the ST-124 w/ VA-5 head from Cameraland as well coincidentally. Blown away by the quality, stability, and weight. It’s a little long folded down for my tastes, but was just the ticket for standing while looking through a straight spotter.

A lot of character, and history on this one. I know the feeling of trying to find obscure parts and pieces for older guns. You usually search for months/years and pay through the nose once you find the right thing.
A 1"x30" belt grinder is pretty indispensable as well. I use one in a similar fashion as you noted. You can sharpen a knife really fast, but I feel like you could destroy one equally quickly if you don't know what you're doing.
Definitely some truth here. I am a proponent of 3v, 4v, and M4 myself to name a few favorites. Once sharp these edges will last and last. If you have zero sharpening experience diamond sharpening set ups will help with abrading these high vanadium carbide steels, but be prepared for a more steep...
The credit card sized hones work equally well as their larger counterparts, but they are little slower due to their size. You will need to make more passes, and go slower because you are holding them closer to your hands. They are pretty good to take in the field though. I use 8"x3" DMT bench...
That is great. It is truly a dying skill set. If that is the case then I would suggest going with a fixed blade knife like some have already suggested. I also would suggest focusing on a high carbon tool steel (1095, 52100, O1, A2) or a low Vanadium Stainless (LC200N, N690, AEB-L, 14C28N). I...
Question to the OP, do you know how to sharpen/have sharpening equipment or do you have the desire to learn? It appears there are two camps here with the suggestions. Disposable and non disposable blades. Maybe if we know the answer to the question we can provide more examples that meet those...
Hey, sometimes a gun with a story makes it more valuable to the one who carries it than any value book might suggest.
