    Backlanz bipod

Gidday - I live in the same city (Invercargill, New Zealand) as the guy who makes these, and have talked to him about the product. I don't own one, but have used one on loan (at the range) and can vouch for both the quality of the bipod, which is stunningly light, and for the integrity and...

Make your own Suspenders - inspiration needed

I made these ones (trucker style) and they work OK, I can carry my pack with them on - no interference at all, and my bino's clip to the D's at the shoulder. I would like to refine and simplify the next design a bit, possibly G clips that double round the belt, and lose the big front...

Make your own Suspenders - inspiration needed

Or Braces" as we call them down here in NZ. Has anybody made their own?? I'm looking for ideas for my second set, I made the first set to hold up my pants and carry my bino's, and they work OK but attach to my pants belt, which I'd like to avoid. Ideally I'd like the option of a thin belt...

    Hairy Meat

"He who eats the most meat eats the most hair" is what anybody who complains gets told round here!

    Steep country shelter

Too many tents rely on guys and pegs for my liking, for getting a pitch that will stand a lot of wind above the bushline (I'm down the "roaring 40's here) you can't beat "skirts" on your fly sheet - just pile on the rocks! Treat them as a sacrificial wear strip. This approach makes the most of...

Equipment versus practice posts and Rifle practice/shooting

What an excellent concept. Every shot taken at game is a "scored shot". I find that shooters who consistently shoot scored targets (or tests like this one) are generally much better at at taking game cleanly at reasonable distances. There is no such thing shooting at game as explaining away a...

    New lightweight tent

Hello Kevin (from down in New Zealand). After more than 50 years of hanging out in our mountains I'm doing a very careful review of my gear. I have some tried and true 4 season tents (One Planet Goondies) that have proven themselves in our extreme conditions, but the weight penalty is pretty...

    Roessler Rifles, anyone have experience?

Down here in NZ we see a few of these, mainly the Titan 6 model. A friend has two, they shoot very very well indeed. I'd say somewhat of an acquired taste, though, they never sold real well.

    Introduction from New Zealand

The Catlin's area does produce a good head from time to time but I have a suspicion the base genetics in the area are not the best. The bush there is possibly lacking a few essential minerals. It does seem to grow fairly big framed animals though!

    Introduction from New Zealand

Haha - my cousin has a large farm just over the hill from Papatowai so I get over there frequently - and have been to "The Whistling Frog" cafe but not the "Lost Gypsy" - the farm there has a good stock of red deer so its a good place to go to put something in the freezer!

    Take down Idea

I've seen a lot of take down rifles over the years and owned a couple but they never quite seem to "hit the mark", being either too heavy (a TC Encore) too fiddly (a removable barrel remmy) or too crude (Handi rifle). However I've got an idea for new project that is based on a very old concept...

    Best 6.5 mm for hunting?

I've had several 6.5's over nearly 40 years, I imported (to New Zealand) a Heym SR20 in 6.5x55 waaay back in 1982. It never shot that well so got moved on. Many, many rifles later I have a rebuilt (as close to "as built" as possible, using all the original barrel fittings etc) Mauser Oberndorf...

    Backpacking with a takedown

Hello Guys - sorry about the "47 questions" but I love hearing about how folks from other countries hunt! So - how many people who hunt with take-down rifles actually take them down for the walk in? The walk out? Other stages of a trip? Over here I think most hunters seldom take down their...

    Introduction from New Zealand

Thanks guys. I'm always happy to "chat" with hunters want to come down here, some Kiwi's feel all visitors should be guided, however I'm always pleased to see guys with enough gumption to do the research and plan their own hunt. Taking yourself on a public land hunt is an essential element...
