Just need one more of those; honest..I can quit anytime.

What’s your secret shame when it comes to that/those piece(s) of hunting gear that you just can’t settle on, always looking to improve upon, can’t seem to quit buying when you see something that may be better, even though you have one or several already that are functional Clothes, broad heads...

    Hey Buddy... Are You Lost?

Just curious to see who feels they are ready if their GPS croaked on them deep, deep in the elk woods. Individual, non-electron, land navigation skills i.e., using a compass, map, and terrain association (minimum skills) are essential in the elk woods in my opinion. Possessing good...

    Long in the tooth.....

Ok, riddle me this campers. What is your longest lasting piece of hunting gear. One that you haven’t had to replace, or, merely chose not to. I have an old Federal plastic .22 container (think plastic chew container) which Ive carried my elk reeds in for some 35? years. The other one that...

    Elk Shull Hacker

Don’t tell Mrs Wapiti, but I think I’m in love again. This little critter is a beast (blade is crafted for both wood and bone)! Built rock solid, sharp as a politicians tongue, and at only a bit over 11 ounces, is much lighter than the WY saw. Ya, I think I’ve finally found my saw. It’s only...

    Elk Shull Hacker

In my on-going search to find the best bull skull capper, I’ve got one of these on the way. Oh yeah, I’ve dabbled in them all. The best top knot remover has got to be effective (sharp, good on bone with goo mixed in as well as serve a secondary role to saw up small chunks of wood for the Lite...

What's in your wallet, err, Kill Kit?

What do you cats carry in your hunting pack for processing/tracking big game critters? If memory serves, this is what I have: Knives/Saws: Older model Gerber Gator 5.5” fixed blade (or sometimes one of my custom knifes, if not hiking too far that day an I’m being wimpy about the weight)...

    Hydration

3 liter bladder for a full day hunt. Usually carry a water filter just in case the hunt turns into an an all nighter (break down and pack out). You can get by without extra chow but gotta gave the H2O.

    KISS (no, not the band)

Ha, I hear ya. I have a Schrade Uncle Henry lock blade, from the late 70s, guaranteed against “loss”, I kid you not. Way too heavy to carry on most hunts tho. A great knife that’s dressed out elk, deer, bear and more than a bunch of fur bearers trapping in the Big Sky State back in the day.

    KISS (no, not the band)

In the keep it simple category, what item/piece of gear in your hunting tool box is something that just flat out works and you see no reason to ever replace it with something new/different? I’ll start :-). I have an old Federal .22 container (similar to a modern day plastic tobacco container)...

    The Headlamp Thread....

Some people are boot junkies, some lean towards premium packs, top shelf hunting clothes; yes I’m susceptible to all of those. Latest and greatest, double dog guaranteed to increase your success by 43.5 % new model of big box brand bows? Nah, not so much for me....I love my Darton :). Ok, I am...

    The Cooler Thread........

Allrighty campers, let's talk about hunting coolers. Arguably, one of the most important tasks at hand once you've packed out an elk is to get/keep it cool, as quickly as possible, and.... to transport it back to the homestead once you break camp. What have you found that works well for you to...

    Emergency Gear in your Pack?

After a few harrowing backwoods hunting adventures in my youth, I've always carried a basic load of emergency gear in my pack. I'm curious to see/hear what other back country hunters carry. For the purpose of this thread, to keep it on track with the theme, I'm talking the type of outing(s)...

    Elk Huntin’ Boots.

When folks ask me what the most important piece of elk hunting gear is (either for newer elk hunters, or, those looking to upgrade something) I usually say "get some good boots". A close second would be a top shelf all in one pack but that's for another thread. Allrighty, what elk huntin'...
