    AK Moose 2024

I've witnessed it one day with with my brothers 329PD shooting 300+ gr load's. We got it running again, but it took some time at the bench to get that frozen lockwork disassembled and puzzled back together. He reverted to 240 gr loads, and it's worked since. Obviously it's a N Frame vs L...

    AK Moose 2024

Careful getting too heavy on those "Ti" guns. I don't know about the 396, but the N Frame 329 (.44 mag) can seize up the "internal lock" system under recoil with heavy cast bear loads. If it happens, the gun is out of the fight until completely disassembled.

Want a canoe, know nothing about them

One last note…. The last time I was canoe shopping, I was seeking advice from a more experienced tripper. His comment was: “Just remember that RED canoes look better in photos”. Haha. He wasn’t wrong.

Want a canoe, know nothing about them

Hellman Prospector on the left. A regional Canadian brand. Bought it in Whitehorse 15 yrs ago.

Want a canoe, know nothing about them

Dang. Canoeing is a top wilderness activity. Kayaking sucks though. Hate to get in an out of those things, and portaging is a bear. :D I pretty much agree with roosterdown. For sandy / gravel streams, your top choice is a composite, but it's going to be well out of that...

    AK Moose 2024

Shoot. My 2022 moose was 50 yds from the outhouse tree at first light. Truth is I don't bother bringing a pistol for moose hunts because the rifle is never out of reach! If I was hunting with a trad bow, I'd carry iron though. Only makes sense.

Want a canoe, know nothing about them

You describe the use case for the Prospector style canoes. Nearly all major companies make a version. Arched bottom, some rocker, no keel. 16 or 17' is about ideal. I wouldn't pass up a Mad River Explorer either. Flat bottom boats like the Coleman's and Old Town Campers are great for...

    AK Moose 2024

This is where some of my most interesting bear encounters have occurred. They tend to die in the thick stuff where visibility is low. I've messed with the .460 Rowland as have several people I know. Reliability is pretty low and takes a lot of polishing and tuning to get right. One...

    AK Moose 2024

.44 was the standard in AK for decades, but judging by what I see in the shops and in the field, are now being substantially out sold by the 10mm. It’s hard to even find a good revolver on the shelf anymore. Neither one gets used on bears often enough to establish any real track record. Like...

What constitutes a vacation for you and your family?

My family travels and recreates probably more than most. Weekends or extended weekends out of town are the norm in the summer and pretty frequent in the winter. We consider remote cabin trips, RV camping, hunting, hiking, canoeing, etc... as "Trips", as long as it's still in state (and...

Anyone have experience w/ long range fuel tanks?

Going against the prevailing tire opinion here... Having traveled nearly all of Alaska's remote gravel highways, and quite a few of Yukon's and NWT, I'd spend my payload budget on a jug of fuel over an extra spare if you already have 10 ply. Our gravel isn't as sharp as it is in some of the...

Anyone have experience w/ long range fuel tanks?

I’d note that if you already carry a bunch of stuff in the bed, an aftermarket metal tank + fuel will further eat into the minimal payload on a Tacoma. Particularly if you also have a canopy or the typical bolt on mods as well, that would at least be a consideration for me.

Outdoorsy Career Path for Civil/Structural Engineer

I own a small consulting engineering firm in Alaska that specializes in field work. Our civil / geotechnical engineers and surveyors each spent 50+ days in the field last season. And by "field", I don't mean local project inspections. I mean sending those engineers to every far flung...

    Alaska Goat Hunt Boots

I've gotten away with some pretty soft boots for sheep hunting. For hunts not involving glacier travel, the reduced weight on my feet easily outweighed the reduced support. Killed the last couple wearing Trango TRX, which are basically REI class hikers. BUT... for goat, I still like those...

Building a house for penny pinchers.

I've known many people that have build temporary apartments in basements, garages or shop buildings to avoid biting of the whole house build at once. Pretty common in this state. Sometimes it works out great, but often not. I'm personally not a fan. Usually they get burned out with the...
