Hi guys, my mate send me these pics of a Shiras he bumped into the other day and we are both wondering how big he actually is.
Seems to me to absolutely HUGE, ive never seen a photo of a Shiras remotely this size, but I dont know alot about moose.

Surely some people on here who know their Mooses

That would make for a hell of an Alaskan moose

That's a monster in my shiras neophyte opinion. I've seen a few, and none have been close to that..

Glad Im not the only one who thinks that thing is insane haha.

Ive only seen a couple of Shiras, but that bull is bigger than nearly all the moose Ive seen in BC.

I hope he's in Idaho Unit 51! I've got a tag there and I leave in 2 days!

That bull looks to be super wide. There are some bomber Shiras in Colorado. Two years ago I took a pic of this one while he was sleeping. I actually thought it was a shed from a distance, and then a dead emaciated carcass when I got closer. But didn't realize just how tall that grass was down there. This was a big bull as well. Wish I'd had a better zoom.

I've seen a lot of bull Shiras in the last few years. Two of them were absolutely huge and a couple of others stick out in my memory.

That things dwarfs them all!

Is that moose from New Zealand?

I haven’t seen many Shiras but I’ve studied a ton of Alaskan moose for my hunt in 2020.

I saw a biggin next to the White River near Meeker Colorado but he wasn’t close to that beast!

If he was in NZ some one would have shot him by now haha. This bull is in CO somewhere.

Our moose here in NZ never came to much, they were put into the wrong habitat. Small ratty heads, last one shot in the 50s or the 60s. Some evidence of them in the early 2000s but most people think they are extinct

I want to believe they're around but i don't think so anymore. I read a book from the 80s think it was called Call of the moose, if i recall correctly there was some evidence they hung on longer than originally thought.

Ken Tustin has had DNA confirmed evidence(hair and shit) from the early 2000s I think.
His book is called 'A Wild Moose Chase' i think.
He has spent 10s of thousands of hours down there and has hundreds of game cams. Hes confident they still exist, but hes one of the few Haha.

Either way there will never be a huntable population of them and never really was.
The terrain and habitat is not at all like moose country ive seen.
