    AK Sheep, Population Observations

Great post. I agree we need to get past the us vs. them, except for dicks with plane that spot animals, not just sheep. I think there are lot of things that can be done in aggregate, but arguing over a few NRs taking sheep isn't going to solve anything and its sad that the same broken record...

    Sheep mounts and Taxidermist

I use Woodland Taxidermy in Palmer. He's done 8 for me and has 2 more in his shop. I've been happy with the results.

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

Sad deal for sure. From what I've read and heard is the populations in the parks that are off limits are also declining. The thing I wonder most about this inference is how good was the population data we're comparing it too? Are those historic numbers representative? I know I ran across a...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

Maybe a winter project. Figuring out what ones are sub-legal will be the hard part. I've sorted the 7yo/sub FC, but that doesn't mean they weren't sealed... ;) Figuring out the code will take a few beers. A rough guess would say that at least 68% since they make up that portion of the hunter...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

We've looked at all these stats ad nauseam. How would this proposal have any real effect on sheep populations? Seems we'd just swap the harvest ticket from NR to Res. If killing less rams a year was the silver bullet, we should have seen an explosion of sheep numbers in the Chugach post draw...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

I'm not sure what you're shooting for with the corrals, or if its just your Alzheimer's is kicking? Let me guess you helped build those corrals and broke half those moose to pull sleds and ride? Where you here when Cap'n Cook sailed up the inlet too? You got me on the fatass thing. Pretty...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

So you admit you haven't done it, but 2 people did it once, how many years ago? I'm guessing a couple decades? But by your estimation its very common, and there are "pockets" of sheep that get overlooked? :D Yep, pockets of sheep all over the place, super common. Congratulations? I know a guy...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

It's 100% fantasy land where he lives. He hasn't hunted anything besides a SS check in 10 years, let alone ever walk in off the road and kill a FC ram in a HT area in a day and be home before dinner.

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

You can request the raw data from ADFG. They don't calculate the numbers for you, you'll have to dig into it yourself. The population issue has little to nothing to do with killing rams or who kills them. If it is an issue, then we are all to blame, and all the studies that suggest that...

    AK Sheep, Population Observations

Hunter number have been static for the last 10 years, there are actually fewer NR today than at any point in the past. Around 400, and about 65-75 of those are next of kin. Fewer than 1% of resident sheep hunters kill more than one ram in 4 years. ~70% of all resident sheep hunters are on...

    Sheep hunter rescued...

If the guard its free, they are usually the last resort. Many of the extraction services will only land during the day on flat terrain. I've talked with a few guys in the guard on this over the years. If its not a guard helo, wave them off, or expect a bill. haha

Is the "Caribou" considered, "Entry Level" Trophy Hunting....???

Don't pick on Sourdough. He used to live in Anchorage and now can only see the lights of it from his cabin. He tries to tell people how bad ass he is, after he moved here from CA of course, and how he lives off the land. This guy is a joke. The only thing he's hunted in the last "ten" + (10)...

Is the "Caribou" considered, "Entry Level" Trophy Hunting....???

I still think you're the same guy from Hope. He also believes that a "real hunt" can only be achieved in the course of a month or "SIX" (6) weeks [I included the number twice so you really understand how "important" it is?] Any time shorter than that, hell, you might as well just go grocery...

Is the "Caribou" considered, "Entry Level" Trophy Hunting....???

Care to share what you think is a "trophy" animal in your mind, or is there such a "thing?" Does a successful hunt require "two" or "more" animals to be worth it? Is the "experience" worth anything or is all about killing a boat load of caribou for your freezer, and living off govern't cheese...

    Show me your sheep rig

This one has taken 10 rams now. I guess I'd say it qualifies as a "sheep rig." Its also pretty handy for caribou, deer, and even a brown bear. Kimber Montana 308 win.

First time sheep hunter with a TMA tag

Sounds like you got your money's worth! Sucks about the sheep numbers. They have been pitiful across most of the state. There is usually only 2-3 40" rams killed in the TMA early season, and about the same on the later hunt. There have been a few exceptional years where 7-8 were killed. I...

Alaska / Canada guys - Ammo availability question

Location of ammo is the airlines choice. Some allow it in the rifle case others do not. On international flights, some require it in a locked box. In most cases yes its avoidable, in others its not.

How many years to draw first sheep tag?

I think I drew 2 in 7 years. The wife drew 2 in 5 years. Both is us drew the first year applying. I don't really even get excited for the draw anymore. So much sheep hunting to do on a HT that is just as good or better. YMMV.
