Success In The High Country: My Public Land Colorado Elk

Thanks for the kind returns everyone! It was a great hunt that we still talk about. Military duties will have me absent from the 2021 season, but I am hooked for life on elk hunting!

Success In The High Country: My Public Land Colorado Elk

I've started a few threads about equipment and technique in the past year about a Colorado Elk hunt I had coming up. This post is a bet late, as this was 2020 Rifle 2, but I am very pleased to report that luck was on my side, and the efforts of myself and others paid off, and I was successful...

What gear are you replacing in 2021?

I'm eying new boots. My Lowa Camino GTX's aren't bad, but they've always rubbed my heels (thank goodness for Luekotape). Considering some Crispi Nevadas.

Long-ish Range Capable Factory Rifle Suggestions (7mm Rem Mag)

It is not. I even had a local 'smith borescope it, and he said it looked to be in fine shape.

Long-ish Range Capable Factory Rifle Suggestions (7mm Rem Mag)

My apologies. I actually don' have an original thread. Besides the 150gr Power Point, I'm not seeing any significant improvement with the other loads. Most are shooting 1.5-2 MOA, especially the heavier bullets. I find it odd that the cheapest ammo is shooting the best, but according to...

What length barrel are you running suppressed?

I've been eying Bergara's 18" 6.5 CM offering, specifically to hunt with in combination with my SilencerCo Omega.

    McMillian, Bell & Carlson, etc.?

I went with a B&C Medalist on my R700 7mm08. For my uses, the intersection of cost and quality is about right in the B&C line. WIth that said, the McMillan is obviously a better stock. My rifle consistently shoots half MOA with several factory loads in the B&C, but the forend flex is still...

    finding a practice round?

I shoot a lot with a .22. Cheap practice, even in these times, and the fundamentals carry over. Outdoors to 100-150ish it really makes you stay on top of the winds. I use a Remington 504, which closely duplicates my R700 hunting guns, but honestly IMO you don't need to do that. Trigger control...

Long-ish Range Capable Factory Rifle Suggestions (7mm Rem Mag)

Thanks for the input everyone. To answer questions, and also provide an update: - I don't have much much trigger time behind magnums, but with the muzzle brake recoil is quite mild. I am genuinely not concerned about my form, though there is always room for improvement - I have cleaned the...

Who has moved UP in caliber for elk

I shot my first and only elk in 2020 at 200 yards with a 7mm08. I am stepping up to a 7mm Rem Mag for some extra range, and just as important wind bucking ability. WIth that said, I had no issues with the 7mm08 and if I grow impatient with my 7RM I'll grab old reliable without a second thought.

Long-ish Range Capable Factory Rifle Suggestions (7mm Rem Mag)

I'm about at my wits end trying to get an older Remington 700 7mm Rem Mag to shoot. It's bedded into an HS Precision stock, has been looked over by a gunsmith, and nonetheless I can't get it to consistently shoot sub MOA with factory ammo nor hand loads. I have considered the fact that it could...

When does hand loading become necessary?

For me hand loading became "necessary" (IE worth my time) as a cost savings tool. By my monkey math, I will recoup my equipment costs at 100-150rds of 7mm Rem Mag loaded with premium bullets v buying them. Thats also the only cartridge I load for. Of course, now with the ammo shortage...

    Alternatives to Lowa Camino GTX?

Try as I might, my Lowa Camino GTX boots do not work for me. Alternate lacing, different socks, SuperFeet hiker insoles, etc. regardless I still get heel blisters and foot pain. Additionally, for what I want/need, the x-lace system is hot garbage and gets in the way. With well over 60 miles on...

Potentially Sophomoric Question About Glassing w/ Higher Power (12x) Binos

I thought they were. I am not. Tripod is next on the list. I will play with that a bit more. I am moving up from some very old 8x42 Monarchs and they were much more forgiving.

Potentially Sophomoric Question About Glassing w/ Higher Power (12x) Binos

They appear in the edges of each tube, so in the edges and center of the combined image. Kidney shaped. Similar to when you aren't centered correctly on a riflescope or spotting scope.

Potentially Sophomoric Question About Glassing w/ Higher Power (12x) Binos

Greetings all. I recently purchased a pair of Meopta B1.1 12x50's for CO elk and deer at the recommendation of this board. Overall I'm mostly impressed (there is some notable edge distortion, but nothing is perfect). However, after messing around with them I do have a question about technique...

Thanks for the input everyone, I just pulled the trigger on some Meopta Meostar B1.1 12x50's.
