Dalton Highway 5 Mile in rifle hunt

While it is definitely not the most ideal hunt, is is one of the few ways you can hunt an amazing piece of Alaska and pretty much have the area all to yourself without having to pay a fortune in transporter fees. I have done this hunt the past 3 years in a row and we have all gotten our caribou...

How many game bags for Caribou?

I feel that 4 large game bags will suffice. Use one for each quarter and there will be enough room in the front quarter bags for the extra meat. Just make sure that you cool the meat individually prior to placing the extra meat in with the front quarters. As long as the bugs arnt too bad you can...

    Caribou antlers August 19 - 28?

I have hunted up there the 1st week of Sept the past few years. I would say that most were still in velvet at that time. Some of the bigger bulls had shed their velvet though. We have shot 5 bulls off the Dalton highway the 1st week of Sept. All still in velvet.

    Anyone tried bear?

I got my first bear this spring in Alaska. It was a couple year old sow. We cooked up the backstrap in camp that same night. I have had just about all the big game animals in North America and this was by far my favorite. I have always been put off at the thought of eating bear, but now that I...

    4 Bears, One Trip!!!

A couple buddies and I started planning our first ever bear hunting trip last year. A guy I met told me about a spot he went sheep hunting a few years back and saw plenty of bears, so I went to work planning a bear hunt for the same area. It would require a several mile hike in. We made plans to...

2022 Haul Road Caribou Hunt. Who is going????

Sorry, that may have come out wrong. I have never went out and back on the same day to hunt. All of my out and back trips have been to recover meat or gear that was left out there after a successful hunt. I have always packed gear to stay out there a few days and then take a few days packing out...

2022 Haul Road Caribou Hunt. Who is going????

It’s is possible to hike out and back in a day. Just plan to hike out very early and getting back pretty late. I have done this hunt a few times over the past few years and have been successful each time hiking out past the 5 mile zone. It’s actually not that bad with an empty pack. We have made...

    Afognak Elk 2022

It’s made by nu way. Looks almost identical to a wood burning stove with the pipes and everything but runs off of propane. Totally safe to run in your tent with the vents open.

    Afognak Elk 2022

I use a propane stove. I think it would be difficult to find dry wood there.

    Afognak Elk 2022

Just watched the video as well. Good representation of the type of weather to expect there. I think having a big warm base tent to comeback to makes all the difference in the world. It makes the crappy days bearable knowing you can comeback and get dry. That’s why I invested in an Arctic oven 12...

    Afognak Elk 2022

I got lucky and drew the DE 717 elk tag for Afognak Island. I have never been to Afognak, but have hunted goats on Kodiak so I understand a little of what to expect with weather and terrain. A buddy and I are booked to fly out with Seahawk air on the 6th and returning the 19th of October. I...

    Alaska Spring Black Bear Hunt

Hopefully it won’t be an issue, I was seeing some bears out around Prince William Sound last year on May 10th. I was able to get the dates pushed back to the 11th-17th. Maybe a little better chance of timing it right.

    Alaska Spring Black Bear Hunt

A couple buddies and I are looking at driving down to the Kenai Peninsula near Cooper landing for a DIY spring bear hunt. We reserved a remote cabin for the week of May 9-14th. Has any one hunted this area this time of year and would you think we are hunting to early in the year? Any advice...

2021 AK haul road and caribou report

Three of us went up in Sept and did the 5 mile march out. After getting out there and spending the first few days killing ourselves in that tundra we decided that we would only shoot one caribou and be done with it. We were mostly seeing cows and the only bulls were a long ways off. We finally...

    Kodiak deer/ goat combo

You sound like a guy I work with in the ICU! Lol

    Kodiak deer/ goat combo

Yeah we both drew the DG474. I would expect at the elevation we are hunting we will be too high for deer but we will see. Same as you though, if we are not seeing deer we will move after we fill our goat tags.

    Kodiak deer/ goat combo

We will be flying into a high mountain lake for goats and if we both tag out we will have them move us to a better location for deer.

    Kodiak deer/ goat combo

We fly out with them at 1100. Havnt fully decided yet but we have goat tags for 474. We will be out from the 4th-18th.

    Kodiak deer/ goat combo

    Hornady ELD-X Ammo issues

Definitely mixed reviews. I feel as though they would do fine on behind the shoulder vital shots. In our situation, my son had his first shot ever on a big game animal and hit it a little far forward. My shot was intentional in the shoulder due to it quartering towards me and it was a now or...
