Spare Magazine or not Backcountry Sidearm

I carry a 10mm Glock most of the time outdoors. If I'm backpacking I may have a spare mag, I won't if I'm hunting. It's just extra weight. If I do get lost/attacked or whatever a 15 round mag gives me one string of SOS shots, 1 round to finish of a wounded animal (I rifle hunt) and 5 spare...

WTS 300 Win Mag, 22-250 and 45LC brass and dies

I will take the .45 Colt dies and brass

    For You Handgun Guys

Ah, I see what you're saying now. Yes, you are correct. I thought you meant somehow reach in and reset the transfer bar by hand. I always assumed they made the 83's that way because the original Colts had 4 clicks. The first being a safety notch (has anyone ever actually used that?). So it...

    For You Handgun Guys

But the OP was asking about a .454 or larger. With that sort of custom work the prices become much closer in line and adding the 6th shot to a .454 makes for a larger less handy gun. I love my .454 but I honestly pack my New Vaquero .45 simply for the weight savings. Anywhere in the lower 48 I...

    For You Handgun Guys

No. FA has their own grip design sort of between a bosley and a standard grip. An improved No. 5 grip frame if you will. You're not going to like a standard single action grip firing full .454 Casull loads. The FA grips feels the best to me with heavy loads but I prefer the standard grip with...

Show me your elk rifle and weight?

I dont have a picture but I hunted elk with a Ruger No. 1B in .300 Win Mag this year. With the Leupold 3-9 it probably weighs 10 pounds or around there.

    For You Handgun Guys

Why build a Blackhawk when you could get a Freedom Arms gun for the same money? If I was going to build a Ruger it would be off the older larger model Vaquero frame just to save weight over my Freedom Arms .454.

    Sawbuck or decker pack saddle

I've used all three and the modified deckers are my favorite. They just add so much versatility it's amazing. Of course I've watched some old time packers and they can make about anything work with the right hitches and manty configurations.

Dedicated mule deer cartridge. Which one and why?

I've been hunting desert muleys with the same cheap Remingron .30-06 for over 20 years now. It's just a deer, it doesn't take anything special to kill one.

    Glock 10mm or Blackhawk 454

I have the choices of a Glock 20, Freedom arms .454, old model Vaquero .45 and a smaller New Vaquero .45 Colt. For grizzly country in the lower .48 I usually end up with the old Vaquero with heavy BuffaloBore loads. Its light enough to carry all day while still being a heavy enough of a load to...

    Merino Wool Care

Same here. I tried keeping them separate but my hunting base layers got mixed into my work base layers years ago. I've never had problems from washing them, I just wear them out from use.

    Lever Action Hunters

My favorite levergun is my Winchester 1895SRC in .30-06. It shoots great with 180 or 220 grin RN. I've got a reproduction Lymn 21 sight for it but havent gotten round to mounting it yet. Just a few of my other levers:

Revolver or Semi Auto for Grizz Protection

I have a couple Glock 10mm pistols that I carry in a chest rig much of the time but in Grizz country I opt for a .45 Colt (loaded hot). I shoot a single action better than I do a Glock and I'd rather have one or two good hits with a big bore than several more mediocre hits/misses with a small...

    Truck Gun

Never fired it at anything larger than a coyote so far. I had one that was an absolute tack driver that was on the fast track to becoming my favorite rifle until it was stolen. Havent worked much with its replacement to see if it shoots as good or likes the same loads.

If it ever happens I doubt I'll get to pick and choose which guns I get(in that unlikely situation I'll likely die in front of my gun safe trying to decide of what to take and what to leave). More likely I'll be stuck with what I have already near. So probably one of my truck guns. My 1895...

    Truck Gun

My truck guns get changed out between a Ruger GSR in .308, a Winchester 94 Trapper in .30-30 and a Winchester 1895 in .30-06 (ya I guess I have a type). The .308 and the .30-30 both have the ability to mount lights and eventually they will have a red dot. They've all always worked when I needed...

    something new for out west?

400 yards... a simple .30-06 (or similar) with an equally simple 3x9 is more than enough.
