Anybody out there hunted this tag before? I drew it this year and have gotten some good intel from several people, but could always use more input. Shoot me a PM or reply, I appreciate it!
@AKShooter , Check out Riehl Sew and Vac. They had a good variety of machines including the 206rb and a used Sailrite clone for sale last summer. You might get lucky and find a good machine in there for a good price, without the shipping cost.
If you are planning to take bear spray into the field, I highly recommend buying one of the "training" canisters to practice with. It will help you understand the capabilities of spray pattern and distance. In my opinion It's definitely worth the $15 to know what you are dealing with.
Good point, I might add that column this year just to see what it comes in at. Most of the higher calorie pre-packaged dinners use either pasta or rice to get high calorie counts, and as a byproduct you get a good amount of carbs. It's more difficult to get high protein and fat in backpacking...
Another vote for the Nemo Fillo pillow here. The combination of the air inflation and memory foam is really great. I will never do another backcountry trip without it, I sleep so much better now.
1 pound of food per day (likely around 2,000 cal/day) will not be enough IMHO. With as much energy as you expend during a sheep hunt, you should be up around 3,000 cal/day or more. Even at that, you may be left wanting for energy depending on your height and weight. My shorter light-weight hunts...
flyingshocker is right, there is a learning curve to sewing silpoly and silnylon. One thing that can help is to use basting tape (double sided tape) that holds the two pieces of fabric together while you sew. You just sew through the basting tape and it stays in place (no harm in leaving it in...
I sewed up a meat bag (similar to the Stone Glacier Load Cell) using 1.9 oz PU Coated Silnylon and it turned out great. It's very durable and the PU coating keeps the meat dry against the elements. Something to consider: the amount of material used to make the load cell is only about 1 yard, so...
I called last week about my order (placed December 31) for a fixed 10x and was told that they have several shipments on the way, but they don't know the contents of each shipment. For the fixed 10x they expect to be able to fill it in March at the latest.
I also called Blaser USA to ask about the Sauer 100 Stainless XTA. The rep said that they are in the process of getting things lined up (part numbers, pricing, etc) to get the rifle imported. He said they are still waiting on final specs from German HQ (rifle just got announced before the...
I reached the Beretta customer service, their catalog is wrong. They will still be producing the T3X Lite Stainless in 6.5 Creedmoor. Now it's a waiting game until things are back in stock.
I was looking through the 2020 Tikka catalog and it appears that they no longer offer the T3X Lite Stainless or Superlite in 6.5 Creedmoor? I'm only interested in a stainless variety for hunting up here in AK. Has anybody confirmed this? I'm going to call later today and if I get an answer I'll...
From all the reviews I've read, they were well regarded for their price point. There is a good review here on rokslide by Ryan Furman, if you haven't read it yet here is the link (https://www.rokslide.com/nikon-fx1000-black-6-24x50-riflescope-review/). Where are you seeing them for $350, that's...
The Nikon is a First Focal Plane scope so the reticle will change in size as the magnification changes. At the higher magnifications it will be larger and easier to see, It may be faint at the lower magnifications, but I haven't looked through that specific scope before.
Welcome to AK! I'm in Palmer as well, you're going to love it up here. Keep your eye out for a G3 or other fully welded jon boat, they come up fairly often. If you want to use it to fish the Kenai, you will need a 4-stroke with 50hp or less on the powerhead.
oenanthe, ya that's where the caribou were at, we got lucky out in the middle of the plateau as we were headed that direction. My guess is that they headed up high to get away from bugs when the weather got nice/hot. That must have been one hell of a hike, props to you for doing it twice!
