Not trying to hijack the thread, but building on @Nicaburns question... is anyone running more than 3000fps on the 147gr bullet in 6.5PRC? And here's the hijack part, would running a 3080fps velocity out of my short barrel 21" @1.8 twist (Seekins Element) be a bad idea?
I have some Crispi Idaho's that just give me a ton of pain in the back of my heel, which then leads to a blister. I love the design of the boot, but after almost 100 miles hoping some break in period would help, there's no change. Today I hiked up and down 1800' and pain was so bad I'm nearly...
Actually, I reached out to Danner this spring and they said a design change was in process. The specific boot is the Danner High Ground. I've not seen the style yet, but my annual boot purchase is this month! The boot absolutely performs for my foot and what I want as far as flexibility and...
Any recommendations for a very light weight saw for cutting the skull cap off of an elk? I spike camp and really trying to keep the weight down this year, including on the pack outs. I don't need a firewood saw, it would be specifically for capping skulls. But if it was multi-purpose, all the...
Thanks for the feedback - just trying to get ideas. I think the DLSR would be too big, so I'm leaning towards a mirror less like the Panasonic Lumix. However, still looking for good long range optical zoom for video. And the battery life for video on the mirror less cameras are much lower that a...
Where do you stand on camera vs. camcorder for capturing video on multiday hunts? I have a GoPro, but I'm looking for something that gives me better video at long ranges and in dim light. I'm struggling to decide between a camera (mirror less-type camera with HD video) or a dedicated camcorder...
I typically find myself only training with packs on hill climbs, so the amount of weight would probably different if I was on flat terrain. I pack 38-45 lbs for a 2000 ft elevation 1.5 miles hike close to the house. I've used weights in the past, but I prefer to use jugs of water so that I can...
Wonder if a smaller tent like a Sawtooth would have been easier to heat up... Looks like you put a small stove in a big tent with a high peak?

Thanks for sharing! This is exactly the example I'm looking for, and describes a typical trip for me. But if the BTUs aren't enough, you'll never get things dry. With horse you could perhaps bring a bigger stove, but for backpacking in I worry the stove will be too small to be effective. Did you...
Thanks - good perspectives. I hear ya about the rain - I'm not a fair weather sportsman, far from it. But it can become borderline dangerous heading back to your spike camp in the rain, in wet clothes, high 30's temps, and crawling into an tent for the night - and then waking up to put all that...
Thanks Mike! Exactly the info I'm looking for. My buddy has been sending me links to those stoves and shelters for a while, but I've never run across them personally. And as you say, lots and lots of options. I can see your setup working well, and would have been great to have this year!
Details?! What shelter are you running and what stove. Much of what I'm doing is spike camping, so I need to keep weight to a minimum. Are you hanging everything in shelter? Do you have to keep the stove going all night, given that most smaller stoves don't put a lot of BTU's out?
Interested in hearing how you dry gear during a backcountry hunt, especially hunting in areas with lots of brush/huckleberries. I hunt North Idaho, and this fall was one of wettest on record. My buds and I packed in with good, light weight, quality gear, but it was no match for the amount of...
I think the key thing is to stay within a range that's comfortable for you. Everyone trains differently and when it comes down to it, the long heavy packs are mostly all mental. It's temping to add 10,20, or 30% more weight than 'normal' in the heat of the moment to get meat out. But that's how...
Anyone interested in a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 tent and footprint? Everything is in like new condition - I can hardly find evidence of any dirt. Tent comes with all of the stuff sacks that you'd get if purchased new, and all stakes, and the pole repair sleeve, etc. I've spent 3 nights in it -...
Thanks for the offer. I have a PM out to a guy on a trade for bass gear. If that doesn't go through, I'll reach out to you.
