Private Pilot License advice and info

I’ve been a cfi/cfii for the past year and a half both in Utah and now in Boise. Happy to answer any questions you might have about the process. There are many different ways to reach your goals in aviation (some more cost effective than others but not “cheap”) it’s just dependent on what you’re...

Who’s got the best jerky recipe?

https://altonbrown.com/recipes/homemade-beef-jerky/ I’ve made this one probably 15 times. Alton Brown knows his stuff, simple and delicious. Occasionally I’ll add some garlic (fresh or powder) but otherwise as is. The first time I ever did it I actually tried his box fan/furnace filter method...

Snow shoes / boot combo for big guy

I wear a 12 wide and have msr lightning ascent snow shoes. They fit my crispi idahos but with not many clicks left on the strap. I bought msr hyperlink snowshoe strap replacements and used the longer ones up front. Worked out just fine

    Pick my 7mm Rem Mag

I don’t think you can go wrong either way. I have an X bolt western hunter in 7mm and have been really happy with it. Same boat as you regarding 500 yard shots and it definitely gets the job done. The one thing I’d keep in mind (and I’d do differently if I did it over again) would be the twist...

Fly fishing and camping in Stanley ID

Awesome, thanks for the reply. I figure it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a spot just didn’t know if I’d have to be driving around to find good river access or whatnot. I’ll definitely look into the hot spring tub too, thank you

Fly fishing and camping in Stanley ID

Hey guys, The wife and I are heading up to Boise from Salt Lake tomorrow and going to stop for a couple days in Stanley to camp and fish. I’ve hunted a good bit around Ketchum but never been to Stanley. Wondering if anybody has any suggestions for a good stream to hit where we might be able to...

MSR Coffee Press or separate French press

I found empty tea bags on Amazon that have a small tie off at the top, I just grind whatever coffee I want before I go on a trip and fill a bunch of those. Then all I do is heat water and chuck one in to steep. No real cleanup and it’s cheap

    Lightest multi tool

+1 for the gerber dime. I consistently use it to swap blades on my havalon especially if you get one that snaps off and need to replace it with messy slick hands. Whatever other random little repairs and fixes I need out there too

Active Mil. Flying Home to Washington - WDFW private access experience?

Right on, got the right idea anyways! So you'll be there for the September archery season I'm guessing? Not the late archery in Nov.?

Active Mil. Flying Home to Washington - WDFW private access experience?

I don't know much about the private access program that they have going on but what part of WA would you think about doing a NF land hunt in? I might be able to point you towards some spots to check out depending on where you're trying to go.

    CO 4th Season 11/211

Awesome, thanks. Figured it wouldn't be too difficult but just wanted to make sure, first time I've dealt with the mandatory testing.

    CO 4th Season 11/211

Hadn’t even thought about that, thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it. When you take it in for the testing did you drop lymph nodes off or the whole head? Just wondering if I’d need to spend an extra day there potentially waiting to get a skull back for a euro mount.

    CO 4th Season 11/211

Hey guys, Decided to burn some points on a 4th season tag this year. Been marking down some spots that I want to look into and I think I have a pretty good idea of where I'd like to go but I'm looking for advice from some folks with experience in the area during that time frame. Planning a...

    Arrows Vanes!!

I’ve messed with different setups but honestly blazer vanes at a 3 degree helical put on with the bohning tower jig are consistent and accurate. Really like the helical for stabilizing arrows, creates more drag and a slower arrow at long range but not by enough that I’d change them. I have a...

    SLC Area Hotels/Restaurants

Depending on where you ended up 8 settlers distillery has surprisingly good food, new American style. Also Slackwater in Sandy, Ogden, and downtown has good pizza and a huge selection of beers. +1 for pretty bird too

Broadheads Hitting to the Right. New Arrows? Arrow Build Help / Advice

I do too, obviously might be different on your setup but I just let my fixed blades sit over the top of my shelf on both bows. This bow has a hamskea epsilon, the other one is a qad ultra rest. Both work with slick trick magnums although these days I’ve been using viper tricks. If you take...

Broadheads Hitting to the Right. New Arrows? Arrow Build Help / Advice

No shortage of suggestions here but my draw length and poundage are the same so here’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve done a bit of playing with arrow lengths and spine lately out of my 70# bow (also a 29.5” draw). Both setups worked well but I’ve opted for the shorter arrow for a slightly higher...

How to find elk in dark timber?

Guess it depends on what other kind of habitat is mixed in as well. If it’s mostly timber I’d look for open pockets where there’s likely feed and focus on edge habitat, move from one section of possible feed to the next paying special attention to those areas you already mentioned. It might be a...

    Elk Shanks

I like to keep some whole for osso bucco or braised whole shanks but I also like to cut all the meat off and cube it into stew sized chunks. Then I’ll portion it out and wrap it tight in plastic and butcher paper and have frozen packaged stew meat ready to use. As mentioned all the tough stuff...
