    pack insight

You can't appreciate a good pack until you've packed out a couple animals with a freighter frame. Get a used Cabelas or Kelty external frame and spend the extra money on more hunts. I think it's funny when guys suggest the latest and greatest toting that brand x is the best but haven't tried...

    Bivy and Tarp?

I do pull the pad out so I can fold it up but I leave everything I sleep in, quilt, pillow, stocking cap in the bivy. That way I know exactly where it is come bed time.

    Bivy and Tarp?

An ultra light bivy is hard to beat even in a traditional tent. Keeps everything together and super fast to pick everything up and jam it in your pack. If it's going to be a nice night I don't even set up my tarp, just throw the bivy out and cowboy camp. I always carry some kind of shelter but...

Seek Outside 2023 new packs (Golden and Wilson)

Wait, @Rockchuck isn't with Seek any longer? When did that happen? I got to work with Nathan a little and I can tell you that guy knows what he's talking about when it comes to packs and shelters. I hope he's doing well.

Was gifted a used MR Longbow, keep or sell it?

I think the Longbow will fit on the PU frame (the Pintler does). I regret selling mine off years ago. I'd keep it.

Is the SO DST Tarp outdated?

I would caution on BPWD. John has been hit or miss the past couple years. Some report great service while others can't get a response out of him. I finally gave up and found someone else when I was looking for a custom job. Don't take my word on it though, Do some research on some backpacking...

Is the SO DST Tarp outdated?

What sets the DST apart from all other flat tarps is the center patch. I don't think any other manufacturer offers that option. This little feature turns this tarp into so many pitching options and usability. For a short time SO offered the DST in Dynema and although it is 8.5 x 10 making it a...

    Chest packs

Been using a Hill People Gear Original Kit Bag as my bino/holster. It fits my Sig 320 in the back pouch and a pair of Leupold 10x42's in the middle with plenty of room to carry odds and ends in the front.

    Seek Outside Flight One Review

Just did a 23 mile overnight last weekend with about 19lbs with mine. Love the frame and comfort once I ditched the intrusion spreader bar. Overall I like the pack but absolutely hate having to wear a harness bottle pocket to access water without removing the pack. The Flight Two solves this...

    First Backcountry Elk Hunt Shelter

The nice thing with most floorless shelters is you can add an inner nest and then you have all the bases covered.

    Silex vs LBO?

My experience with the LBO and now Silex. The LBO is bigger and a good modular setup were you can run multiple setups. The Silex feels big with the dual pole setup. Plenty of room for one and lots of gear. It's pretty darn light at 25oz all in (stakes, cordage, seem sealed, bag). The best part...

Davis Go Tent Review, By Jordan Budd

Thanks for the run down. Seems simple enough. I’ve stopped and spoke with the guys over at Davis before and they seem like nice folks. Now I need to convince the wife I need another tent.

Davis Go Tent Review, By Jordan Budd

Nice review. I've been anxiously awaiting this review ever since Jordon mentioned it in the Antelope package review. Whats your thoughts on pitching the tent alone, meaning how long did it take and how big of a pain was it. After using the trad pole set do you think it would be feasible to DIY a...

    UL fuel efficient cook system

I tried the BRS with my Toaks 550 a couple times but went back to the Pocket Rocket II. Pot kept sliding off the small pot stands and the boil time is a bit longer with the BRS. Always tinkering trying to lighten the load.

    Shipping

I've used a couple pieces of cardboard and sandwiched the pack between then duct tape the folded over edges. Send it USPS because UPS will rape you.

Help me with my pack weight

I can get 8-10 days out of 4 oz but I don't ever take my water to boil. Get it to the point where i see the little bubbles forming and call it good. Good luck on the trip.
