    Picking who shoots 1st Elk???

Whenever I have hunted with another person, we have done hunter/caller setups having 2 or 3 people, either alternating days or individual setups. Shooter on that setup is the shooter. Shooter gets rights to any horns. Anyone involved as shooter/caller/packer gets a share of the meat because...

    Dual Fuel Stoves or canister(butane)

I am down to only 4 stoves since the kids moved out and took their picks with them. Two are liquid fuel, two are canister (one with remote tank). My favorite is a Svea123 from 1971, that I use most, but rarely from a backpack (dual sport motorcycle). If I could only have one stove it would be...

    Pocket rocket 2 stove review?

Just gave mine a one week test drive. Boiled water fine, but I do not eat dehydrated meals...I cook, though relatively simple. Very good flame adjustability. Can do a very low simmer, as long as you are using a wind screen. This one is a keeper.

Water System for super dry Hunt??

This isn't meant to be contrary to anyone else's advise, but I will give you my specific situation. When I lived and hunted in Washington and Idaho, I could get by on about 4 liters of water a day. That is not counting water for food, just drinking. I now live and hunt archery in Utah. 6'0"...

    Water Bladder idea

My set up is: Bladder between bag and frame. Katadyne quick connects off Amazon (cheaper as an add on item). Quick connect positioned about 4 inches up from the bite valve on shoulder strap. Hiker Pro to fill. At home I have a short piece of tubing that mates up with my big Brita filter...

    GPS android apps

I am using Backcountry Navagator and not using my Garmins any more. Phone is now my GPS, camera and backup light. I carry a battery pack for recharging the phone.

    Waterproofing Paper Maps

Just one for the knowledge vault... The other day I had a couple paper 8.5"x11" maps off of CalTopo that I wished I had printed on some Rite in the Rain paper for a trip. Problem was I don't have any Rite in the Rain Printer Paper. Don't have any Thompsons Water Seal either. Grabbed a spray...

    Training weights for a dt2

Wasatch Mountains are a 1/4 mile across public land to the base from the end of my driveway. So I use my regular daypack gear and change the weight with extra water bladders or maybe a couple sand bags from my shooting bench. Vary weights from 40-60 pounds, depending on what the day's plan is.

    Hunting frame and side arms

Tech-lok mounted upside down (hinge down) mounts to one row of PALS very secure. Enough that I forget I have a S&W 629 hanging there. Less than 30 seconds to go from pack belt to pants belt, a little longer to go from pants to pack due to slipping through the PALS.

Back pain after training with pack?

Are you working on your core (belly muscles). A stronger stomache takes a lot of pressure off the back.

8X or 10X for CO Elk hunt

    I prefer 10x42's. YMMV

    Frame/bag setup

I read your question and envisioned an aluminum external frame pack, not the Kifaru or Stone Glacier type. Yes, been there, done that, works just fine and keeps the budget in line. Right now, I am waiting for a new Kifaru frame. In the mean time, I have 55 pounds loaded in my external frame...

    Bear Hunting / Meat

I agree, as steaks they suck bad. We cook roasts(crock pot on small elevated rack so the bear fat collects in the bottom with a few strips of bacon over the meat. Pork fat tastes better than bear fat). Or chunked up in stews, chilli or fajitas.

Worried About Hunting Pressure In OTC Units?

Yes. They are usually really good guys if you end up in a spot where you can talk for a moment.

    Bear Hunting / Meat

I love bear. Just make sure you cook it all the way through.

Finding a top of the line bow shop

Bottom line is that you will get better luck working on your own bow. To your original question: finding a consistent quality shop will always be tough. Most can not pay the wages for a real quality tech to work there as a career choice...just a fact of life. Your average bow shop employee...

Worried About Hunting Pressure In OTC Units?

Well put. I have been hunting 33 seasons as of this year, primarily OTC for deer and elk on public land. I figured out around age 15 that I didn't want to hunt "with" the family any more...I headed out a couple hours early and went to where I saw the deer head when other hunters walked through...

Left eye dominant right handed youth shooter?

My son was right hand/left eyed. His competition guns were all left handed bolt actions. His hunting guns were all right handed. An older man with the same hand/eye taught him how to run a right hand bolt left handed. Much easier to find right handed guns and use them as is, or drop them in...

False. Just have to set the peep up correctly. It is a pretty basic and standard set up.

    Water Bladder or Bottles

I have 5 two and three liter bladders, and a 10 liter Dromedary. If I try to live off bottles I get dehydrated. Utah in the summer means 10 liters a day for me in the shade. I can go through a 3 liter bag running the brush knife out back for a couple hours (and I am not one of those saturated...
