Over Priced Things That Shouldn't Be?

Something’s are comparable at similar prices, but quality is the driving factor. You can’t tell me that a Tikka is the same quality as a Mossberg rifle, they may be able to do similar things, but they aren’t the same. I bought some Black Ovis puffy pants because they were so much cheaper, but...

Snowpack not looking very good :(

We still have maybe 18" of patchy snow on top the divide here west of Helena. I talked to someone from the FS at a meeting last night, he said one of the snowtel sites south of Helena is tied for the lowest recorded year in history. Will be interesting to see how much rain we end up getting.

Montana (and other state) hunter orange laws out dated?

I like the idea of orange hat only requirement in all western states. I get sick of constantly shedding it, and feel like in many of the elk and deer areas I hunt it is unnecessary, yet I still follow the law. I have definitely been happy I’ve been wearing it antelope hunting though. Out on the...

    2024 Montana draw results

I got my LE elk tag with low odds. I usually am the guy who can’t draw an antelope doe tag, so pretty excited.

Guide tip on a elk hunt

I figure 10% is the norm, baseline, unless the guide sucks. If you can float it, I always recommend bringing cash to go above and beyond that if the guys is great. In my time guiding, I have received anything from $100-30% tip. The only guided hunt I have been on was fantastic, I tipped my...

Idaho Man Sentenced in Bighorn Deadhead Case

Good for you guys on the road kill law in Texas. Not sure how that applies to anything here. I sure don't read anything in the article about him killing the ram, sure seems to me, from reading the article, that he picked up a roadkill ram. Maybe there are details missing, but I guess I'm not...

Idaho Man Sentenced in Bighorn Deadhead Case

It is legal for natural death dead heads, not for roadkill. In Montana you can only salvage deer, elk, and moose I believe as roadkill. I read this as it was a roadkill sheep.

Idaho Man Sentenced in Bighorn Deadhead Case

Thoughts on this case? He absolutely screwed up, but $11,000 in fines for essentially an illegal deadhead? https://nbcmontana.com/news/local/idaho-resident-sentenced-for-trying-to-pass-off-montana-bighorn-as-roadkill?fbclid=IwAR2tmsGUdWY8syYsY30PVaVrShR52VT0dHEYiCQ13VUNGsS9YTDvUhw12VQ

    Crazy Big Game Draw Stories

I seem to have a hard time drawing a doe antelope tag. I apply in damn near every western state, and have yet to beat long odds on anything. I have a buddy that drew a sheep tag here in Montana a few years ago, the one and only time he has ever applied for a OIL tag. Applied last minute...

Miles on your old 7.3 diesel?

15-40, I have been thinking of swapping to 5-40. I’ll be honest, I keep trying to love my 7.3, and all I hear is how great they are, but I have not had great luck. I bet I’ve dumped 10k into the thing in the 3 years I’ve owned it. I like Super Duty’s, but I wish I could go back to my F250 with...

    Muley mineral lick

Illegal in Montana. Baiting wildlife. Would be a separate charge for hunting baited area if you hunt the same area in the fall.

    Elk salt licks

Completely illegal in Montana. Two tickets, one for baiting wildlife, second would be for hunting a baited area (if applicable)

Miles on your old 7.3 diesel?

Well, my understanding from my mechanic was that in the 99s and 2000s they put Dana 50s under them in the front. I plow with mine, and ended up blowing up the front diff of the 50. They put a Dana 60 under it a couple years ago, but now I have a couple leaking seals and a grind coming from the...

Miles on your old 7.3 diesel?

I have a 2000 F350 with 208k. Doesn’t love starting when it’s cold, fine if it’s plugged in, but I usually bring a generator to plug it in if I’m at a trail head for a few days in November. That definitely gets annoying. I like the pickup, and haven’t had any rust issues here in Montana, but it...

I dont understand the hostility towards wolf reintroduction in Colorado

Wolves are damn tough on moose. Seems like they never have, or will recover in the Frank Church. I could be wrong. That being said, there are some areas of Montana with steady wolf populations, that I have seen the moose populations grow in the last decade. Not sure what factors would make a...

I dont understand the hostility towards wolf reintroduction in Colorado

I don’t know what the numbers, but they reproduce quickly to a population level that will make detrimental impacts to some extent. Like I said, even with a harvest season, they are almost unmanageable without government assistance (helicopter gunning). The success rates for harvesting wolves in...

I dont understand the hostility towards wolf reintroduction in Colorado

I will also add that I think most these folks are correct, we will never get a season to hunt or trap wolves in Colorado. Even when you do, they are a very difficult animal to hunt or trap. I know a handful of guys who have some consistent success, but they dedicate a tremendous amount of time...

I dont understand the hostility towards wolf reintroduction in Colorado

Ranching and hunting, I used to work with alot of ranchers all over Western Montana, saw the issues they had with wolves, especially during calving season, and on summer pasture. It can be very difficult to get reimbursement from wolf predation if you don't find the kill immediately, which you...
