    My M48 is throated long with a standard box, you're right...I can't reach the lands with anything that'll fit in the magazine. My M21 has a Wyatt's box and I can reach lands with almost any 30 cal bullet, including the 210 ABLR, and still get it in the magazine.

    I've got a Mack Bros. on my Nosler 21. Very nice action, clean machine work and it functions like a champ. At some point, a Defiance or other custom action might be "better"...but once you get into this level of action, they're all pretty darn good.

    I got my son a 7-08 youth carbine as a starter with zero regrets and we took several caribou with it. A 6.5CM or a 260 would be in the same bucket. Make sure you get a youth size stock- stock fit is very important- too short is manageable, too long is not.

    Heavier rifles tend to be easier to shoot and harder to pack. I hunt more than I shoot, I'll take a light rifle every time. You might go the middle route and add a heavier stock and brake to your existing Tikka.
