When you say you have a magnum bolt and receiver, is it a WSM bolt or a standard WM bolt? They aren't the same and will pretty much limit you to whatever bolt face you have.
I really like the WSM, it's become a pain to feed in the last couple of years...but I've been using it since 2006 so I...
My M48 is throated long with a standard box, you're right...I can't reach the lands with anything that'll fit in the magazine.
My M21 has a Wyatt's box and I can reach lands with almost any 30 cal bullet, including the 210 ABLR, and still get it in the magazine.
Best bet I've found is to pay cash and order it. My son totaled his Crosstrek and we replaced it with a Tacoma. We had to order the truck with a $500 deposit...and wait about 7 weeks for delivery. We basically paid MSRP, which at the time was the best I could find.
Buying new or used sitting on...
If I recall, the 28 UL is pretty much 5lbs on the nose. It points almost effortlessly for quick shots at grouse and recoil is negligible. It was a little outclassed on sharp-tails, but in my area they were super spooky and flushing way out. For anything that'll hang tight, it's a hoot.
There...
I'll clarify since I can see where my comment isn't very clear. You can take modern powder and get all the gains that PO Ackley promised with his original AI loads in a factory chamber. Of course, you can put modern powder in an AI and get more gains too.
Some of Ackley's cartridges see some...
PO Ackley "Improved" virtually every cartridge in existence in his day, including the .308WIN.
But, most of them showed very little improvement (if any) over the parent case- including the .308WIN-AI.
It's arguable that the only reason the 280AI has made it commercially is that Remington...
I've got a Mack Bros. on my Nosler 21. Very nice action, clean machine work and it functions like a champ.
At some point, a Defiance or other custom action might be "better"...but once you get into this level of action, they're all pretty darn good.
I got my son a 7-08 youth carbine as a starter with zero regrets and we took several caribou with it. A 6.5CM or a 260 would be in the same bucket.
Make sure you get a youth size stock- stock fit is very important- too short is manageable, too long is not.
Heavier rifles tend to be easier to shoot and harder to pack.
I hunt more than I shoot, I'll take a light rifle every time. You might go the middle route and add a heavier stock and brake to your existing Tikka.
I've killed truckloads of game with the 308WIN.... almost all of them with plain cup and core 150gr bullets like the Core-Lokt and Federal Blue Box.
Don't overthink it, the world is just lousy with good performing bullets at 308 speeds. My current favorite load is a 150gr AB over a full load of...
The Stery action is the SBS 96, "Safe Bolt System". You'll find them marked SBS 96, Safe Bolt, Scout, Pro Hunter and probably some more. But they're all the SBS 96 action.
