I hear you Jethro, 20 years in the game here. Not an argument but There’s more players in this expensive western hunting game then 10 years ago. The convenience and ease of online platforms reach a greater audience then reading Eastmans Green chip areas. My question isn’t a trigger for folks...
As draw results begin to trickle in, it occurred to me that in other industries when a company or product is promoted there is a surge in interest for that product. (such as a GMA) Have any of you noticed a change in draw odds when a particular unit is promoted to be easier to draw blows up due...
Thanks guys! Was an actual scenario that happened a couple years ago. I was able to sneak in and only bump a small raghorn on the way in. There was at least 5 other bulls below me with the thermals coming up. I went with a modified slow play, cow calling, raking, grunting and panting. That’s...
Funny, enough that’s what I did and he moved the whole herd a half mile up and away from me. Surprising as he had at least 5 other satellites harassing him.
So you happen upon a rut fest and are lucky enough to have the whole thing to yourself. You do the right thing by gaining 1,000 feet of elevation to cross the back bowl of a canyon to get to the side the elk are on. The canyon is fully timbered, it’s mid afternoon and your thermals are moving...
Change is inevitable and nobody likes it. Thankfully there’s time to decide what the best practice will be for wintertime feeding as time moves forward. But unfortunately the answer will also include less elk.
You forgot the annual point holder mortality equation worked into the matrix. You know, like the folks I plan on beating in Colorado when I draw a coveted unit 201 elk tag when I’m 105. Then I’ll achieve my ultimate goal of shooting a 370+ bull and sh** myself in a wheelchair at the same time.
R.N. for 27 years and a CRNA for 20 of them. Wouldn’t think about doing anything else. Built custom homes during the summers back in college and have to remind myself of that fact when the job gets frustrating. Healthcare in this country is on a wild ride that isn’t going to change anytime soon.
I have a place in a northern county, I have a friend who’s family has a place in a north central county. We both heavily manage our properties, spend heavily on food plots, limit hunters, actively manage our forests and consistently shoot 3+ year old bucks. I beg to differ. If you build it...
In Wisconsin it will change the dynamics of hunting in the future for sure. As things move forward I can see recreational property values leveling off or even falling in 20 years in the most infected areas. These are some of the best trophy properties in the state, I can’t see the demand...
If your from the midwest: Don’t bother chasing little whitetail bucks if that’s all that’s available to you in your 20’s. Work hard and study harder. You will be able to someday buy better land and access better whitetails yet still have enough to go out west if you desire. I have no regrets.
