Gauge I know how you feel.... I had the same thing happen to me opening day. Put countless hours into scouting and locating a good bull. Ended up cutting him and his cows off going to bed and was present with a very makable quartering away shot. Arrow went clean threw him, bled like crazy for...
I ran the dew point for a year... stuff was crap. leaked, noisy etc etc. Not much fun on Kodiak Island for 14 days. Came home and switched over Kuiu Chugach rain gear and have been nothing but happy.
Coloradoboy
Heres a better idea... save money, invest in kuiu or first lite. Sitka is over priced and over rated.. Wore the stuff religiously for 4 years and spent alot of hard earned money on it and was never all that impressed with its performance for its price. Switched to kuiu predominately with a few...
I've had the privilege to grow up in the unit and have been fortunate to harvest some very nice bucks out of it during the archery and muzzy seasons. The hay day has past. The unit was obviously publicized by certain individuals and the information became common knowledge in the likes of...
Soap can be productive, alot of elk spend the summer in there. Keep in mind though if you drop into the North/South Castle drainages you will have to compete with Tenderfoot Outfitters and If you drop off towards the Soap Creek side you will have to compete with West Elk Wilderness Outfitters...
Used to hunt it back in high school around the woody creek area. Only killed one bull out of the area and that was in the third rifle season. I know some locals that seem to do alright in it but its never really been known as a hot area. Majority of the people focus on the surrounding areas...
Man, It honestly hard to give pointers/advice when it comes to elk hunting. Other than the obvious things such as; get in shape, do your research, shoot your bow as much possible in as difficult situations as possible, good boots, good optics etc, etc.. Honestly elk hunting is something you have...
No good bucks left in 43 I wouldn't bother ;)
43 is a tough unit to hunt. I have had the chance to grow up hunting it and it has definitely declined over the years from 07/08 along with the increased pressure pressure its received from the publicity its received in magazines such as Eastman's...
I've worn about everything on the market and my boots help me make my living. Next to your optics and rifle your boots are one the most important things when it comes to western hunting. There arent many if any offerings for quality boots in the $150 range. Probably the best entry level boot in...
5 points isn't going to get you very far with elk as a NR.... Id recommend focusing on 1 species. Especially since you are coming the the first half of archery season before the elk rut really gets going. Alot of the best high country units that I have hunted or know of take very few points to...
I grew up and cut my teeth in the Maroon Bells. I have the chance to hunt/guide in a healthy portion of the wilderness areas in the state and the bells have been the most physically challenging of them all.
Does your father have any PP's in Colorado?? I would high recommend looking into unit 40. There are alot of LO tags available. Id look into going with Steve Biggerstaff of biggerstaff guide service.
Good shot, i have no problem with head on quartering to shots with magnum rifles.. I've done it plenty of times. You guys were sure heavy on the cow calls hahah
I love my BB grunt tube.. at the same time though I've taken gatorade bottles and cut the bottom out of them and used them as grunt tubes and called bulls in.. Good thing to remember when you leave your grunt tube in the truck or camp in the morning haha
