    2021 Montana Elk Draw

I didn't draw this year in MT and am now 0 for two on the year. However, i expect to be 0 for 3 when Colorado comes out. I guess I'm applying for sheep tags next, so I won't be drawing any tags this year.

    Hiking/Backpacking Boots

I like Lowa boots, quality boots and fit my feet well. I've owned Crispi, Solomon and tried on Zamberlien, Meidle. All seemed like quality boots, but finding boots that fit is the most important factor.

    Wisconsin Wolf hunt!

This is possible, but let's hope they don't re-list when wolves have filled all available habitat (DNR said that) and clearly are recovered. One year of hunting is nice for the hunters that get tags, but I'm hoping they stay under state control where they belong.

    Wisconsin Wolf hunt!

Happy to see them off the endangered species list and the state taking control of their management. This year's hunt is being rushed. The 2021 to 2022 season should give us a better idea of the DNRs management goal.

    Best Sitka/FL sales?

Usually January through March/April, but I haven't seen much for good sales this year. A lot of guys are nice enough to post them on here. Also, sign up for emails from retailers.

    Archery Turkey Masters

I've switched to no blind bow hunting for turkeys a few years ago. I haven't scored yet, but have missed one and had some close opportunities that I blew. A ghillie suit and a decoy helped me get close, but they do pick up your movements quickly in the open. It's certainly a lot more challenging...

Elk Hunting CO in Sept. Should I buy a Mule Deer tag?

I was within shooting distance of several qmule deer does when elk hunting, so I guess it is possible to shoot one without concentrating on mule deer. That said, there are far more experienced elk and mule deer hunters that can give you the pluses and minus of trying for both on the same hunt. I...

How much do you all actually hunt?

This year, I hunted One ten day elk hunt and a four day whitetail weekend away from home. I also hunt a lot of weekends for whitetail around home, then nearly every morning before work from daylight savings time until the end November. Getting up at 3am,then working until 6 is a long day, but...

    Recommend a Hinge release?

I shot a sweet spot for a while, then shot a honey badger bear claw which I liked much better. I found the sweet spot to be awkward and other releases easier to control. The safety will limit your choices, but if you're hunting with it, I understand why you would like one. I knew a couple of...

    Montana General vs Colorado OTC

I have only hunted Montana once, but there where far more Montana hunters than out of state hunters where I was hunting, especially on the weekends. Also, the local Montana hunters hunted hard, getting way back away from the roads. Several camps had horses. Colorado seemed to be more of a 50/50...

    Montana General vs Colorado OTC

I am assuming this is for rifle, but I've hunted both for September archery and am sharing my experience. I found the hunting pressure and elk numbers to be similar in both states (at least where I hunted). I was able to get away from people and find (not kill) elk in both states. There were a...

    Outer Layers

I have the MTO50 and the Sitka Fanatic system. Similar warmth, but the Fanatic is much lighter, more athletic cut and allows me to shoot my bow like I'm target shooting. If I was gun/cross bow hunting I'd go MTO50, less expensive and Goretex is nice in the rain and snow. However, it's too bulky...

Best quality rain gear in solid colours?

This is my setup, works great for the money and weight. Love the minimalist in Olive green and regularly use as a wind jacket when I'm sitting still. I've looked at Arctyrex and it looks better, but for September elk I don't need it.

Colorado advice for a new hunter

As stated above, truck camp near where you're hunting. I have often stayed in a hotel for deer Hunts in other states, but elk country is huge and the roads are often rough. Truck camping isn't a big deal and can be done on the cheap. Lightweight backpacking gear is expensive; heavy truck camping...

    Obligatory first post

Welcome, I've been on two elk Hunts, Montana and Colorado. Both diy archery and no elk were harmed. I had some friends go outfitted in New Mexico at the same time I was Diy in Montana last year. They did way better, but also paid like $6k. Whatever you decide, good luck and enjoy the adventure.
