    Masculinity and Caliber Choice

Probably a dumb question, but "More shots miss" is because of what? My assumption is it's simply the recoil/flinch factor?

    Kids rifle manifesto

@SLDMTN just was on the rokslide podcast talking about the Hobbit Rifle he built for his kids. Might be worth looking at a TC Encore or even a CVA Scout As a fellow dad, he made 2 comments that stood out: - these rifles aren't light. Which is good. Cause lightweight rifles recoil a lot. Recoil...

Rifle scopes you'd love to see Form test

I'm going to bump this. Did Apex Optics get tested yet? @Ryan Avery

    The New Leupold Mark 4HD?

One of my favourite Rokslide threads was the one with the dude who was asking about his buddy's Nightforce scope. Apparently it sucked, wouldn't hold zero, etc. A guy on the forum here offered to meet Dude. Said bring the scope, and he'd test it out. So Dude and his Buddy drove a long ways to...

Why do I suck at long range?

I'm late to the party, but: my bro, you're shooting 700m across a canyon. That's freaking hard. I'd say you're doing well, considering the circumstances. Wind calls are tough. Wind calls in mountains... hope you like head games.

Q&A for Leupold Mark 5 Field Evals

    I'm starting to worry. :(

    Lever gun scope mount

That's why binos were invented. Right took for the job etc. But we all do what we can with what we have at the time. The real question is did you connect on that one?

    Lever gun scope mount

To be honest, I don't really overthink it. 4x is easy to hit a 8" plate at 100m/200m. I don't shoot much further than that with the 444. That rifle mostly rides around unscoped in a saddle scabbard anyway.

    Your Groups Are Too Small

At some point you have to ask yourself "why." 80/20 is the way: do the thing that gets you 80% of what you need, with 20% of the effort. Standard deviations via a 5x5 load ladder didn't cause you to miss that mule deer. Failure to practice did. I say this with a ton of respect, as I have been...

    SWFA Zero Stops

In hopes of helping out the collective Hive Mind: If you are annoyed that your SWFA 6x doesn't have a zero stop, try "M18" crush washers. I specifically used M18 washers that were 18mm (id) x 24mm (od) x 2mm thick. Three of these stacked inside the elevation turret made an almost-perfect zero...

Best practice for simple DOPE card?

I hate "Piling on", so I try to keep an open mind with these things. But the thing is I was that guy. I said the same things to people. I read Jim Zumbo and Ron Spomer and Chuck Hawkes, and Jack O'Connor and Keith and Whelen. Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Peterson Outdoors. All of them. I went...

Best practice for simple DOPE card?

Appreciate your comments. Definitely practice is critical. But the elephant in the room is the one you completely ignored. And cynics will say that was intentional, too. There's $200 on the table for you to shoot 3/3 using your hold-on-air method, and no comment at all? If/when (I really hope...

Best practice for simple DOPE card?

One of the best shooters and teachers out there @THLR showed exactly what happened in the "old days." I posted a thread on it when the video first came out. Check it out below. I've seen/heard the old "You need to shoot quick, or else" nonsense before. Those guys don't hit near as much as they...

Best practice for simple DOPE card?

Respectfully, I've heard this before. And when put to the test, it never has held true. In "the good ol days" guys missed (best case), or wounded. And then followed up the wound by saying "darn, those elk are tough..." and buying a 338 win mag. This is easy to test, and I've done it: get a...

Best practice for simple DOPE card?

My dude, you're advocating for holding on air for 400m +?? Respectively, that's terrible advice. It's been proven over and over and over that keeping the crosshairs on the target, at all elevations, is the most consistent way to score hits. Full stop. Dial, hold for wind, fire. It's not...

What kind of skinning knife do you use and why?

Bumping this thread, just to hopefully give some credibility to my earlier comments. Was very blessed to punch a tag this month, and did this whole mule deer with just the vic. You can see it in the lower-right. They work.

How do you set your rifle down in the field?

In the dirt, against a tree, against a pack. Something like this is pretty typical:

That's awesome! Gives me hope that it's a workable platform.

    The Hobbit Rifle

Could be. I degreased the rail, loctited/bonded it to the barrel. Sportsmatch 30mm rings, LRHS scope. Torqued to usual specs. Apply glitter nail polish. All the same stuff rosklide lore tells me to do (and have done on my tikkas.) My guess is it's a combination of heat, and unequal forestock...
