    Ironbound Lake Outfitters

A friend and I went out September 28th 2023 with Ironwood. Our guide was good. Mark Pike was good to deal with. We both shot bulls - but nothing huge. Mine was 34" and my friends was 29". All but one guy shot his moose in the group that was coming back in when we were heading out. So about a 95%...

    New from MS

Welcome! Spent 15 years in "the sip". Worked in the engineering department at the Nissan Canton Plant for 8 years and moved back to my home state of Michigan 2 years ago to care for aging parents. This is my favorite (and only) hunting forum. Lot's of good folks here. Some tips that took me a...

    Newfoundland Moose hunters 2023 success

Went with Ironwood Sept 28 2023. Both my friend and I got bulls. Nothing huge, but we had a lot of fun. Beautiful country, people were nice. We saw one really nice bull across a river. My guide wouldn't entertain crossing it to get to the bull. 90-95% of the guys got bulls when I was there. Not...

    ROKSLIDE Men's Bible Study

Hey guys - I'll send out an invite again. I enjoyed our study before - just been crazy lately. My son drew a 15 point elk unit in Wyoming that he could archery hunt AND rifle hunt, so we just got back from chasing bulls and having a blast with that - no kills. And I'm getting ready for my...

What’s the coolest thing you found in the back country

Back in 2001 my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He was given a year to live. 2 months after his diagnoses, we decided to go fishing on the Muskegon River using my 18' river boat. As we were driving toward the boat launch, my dad looked out the passenger window and said "it sure would be...

20 years ago - Advice to your younger self

Fire your business partner - you will make enough money to pay him off. Don't worry so much about what other people think. Being honest doesn't always mean you have to tell people what you think - you can keep your mouth shut. Yes - your grandmother AND mother are crazy - don't ponder their...

    Moving away from First Lite

Honestly, I'm disappointed with where the Meateater brand has gone from a selfish perspective and will not support the high level of commercialism it has turned into. Steve came from humble beginnings and probably made the same decisions about chasing the dollar that most people would have made...

5 lb 5 oz Backcountry Rifle Set-up. All stock.

I've seen some guys on line complain that it doesn't have enough eye relief, but I haven't had any issues with that at all. I like it a lot! It's not something I'd put on an antelope plains gun, but for backcountry backpack hunting its about perfect if you ask me.

5 lb 5 oz Backcountry Rifle Set-up. All stock.

Just thought I'd share my "off the shelf" backcountry gun. It's a Howa Super Lite in .308. Has Talley Lite Weight Scope Mounts and a SWFA Ultralight 2.5 x 10 x 32 scope on it. I plan on using it for backcountry elk and mule deer hunts. I'm 56 years old and hurt my knee elk hunting 2 years ago...

What did you do today to get ready for Elk season?

Elliptical and weights first thing in the morning. Blowing on elk diaphragm calls in the car during a work road trip and listening to cows and bugling elk on my car radio. Low calorie intake as I continue to work on dropping a few lbs before I hit the trail.

    Bad taxidermy or high expectations?

I used to do some taxidermy when I was younger. I wasn't awesome at it, but I do know a few things. Did probably 20 deer, a few antelope and a few elk. The hair missing could be from "slip". Hair slip happens when a hide begins to rot. I don't know how the hide was handled between you and the...

    Sold Leupold VX III 4.5 x 14 x 50 Matte Black 30mm Tube Long Range B&C

Scope is in good/great condition. Has a couple very small nicks in the paint - that's it. Has a side focus knob for long range shooting. No box. Had a box until my most recent move. It's been a great scope for me. Never had any problems with it. Decided to try shooting 500-1000 yards so I bought...

Any Thermal Engineers out there? Can I have a meat cooler and a smoker in one??

not a bad idea. I was looking at that material Sunday on-line. It didn't give an R value from what I saw but it's got to be worth something. I actually have the HVAC thing pretty well figured out. You can use the right size AC unit and "trick it" to get the room down to the right temperature for...

Any Thermal Engineers out there? Can I have a meat cooler and a smoker in one??

Hey guys, I'm headed to Newfoundland the end of September for moose hoping to bring back some moose meat to Michigan. I've been toying with making a small walk in cooler for a long time and think I'm going to do it. As I was ponding this project, I thought about the smoker I've also been...
