Hunting with camp on your back?

I would like to hear some of the pros and cons of hunting “with camp on your back”. Who actually hunts this way day in and day out? Do some just spike out for a night or two before returning to base camp? How does it work for guys that do this regularly or consistently? I have had opportunity to...

    Down Puffy in September?

How many carry a down puffy during archery elk seasons? I hear on podcasts and such that is is low weight penalty emergency type item. “I always have a puffy of some type” I have not run into a situation where I would have needed it in the few times I have been out. That said do I need it?

    Fires changing any plans

I have 31 days until go time. I have been keeping tabs on fire activity near where I intend to be. Thus far plan A is still a go. Is anyone having to go to a plan B due to fire? I have not experienced the kind of fire activity I am seeing before this close to where I will be. There will be no...

Stuff sack or no with down quilt

Curious what most do when packing sleep system. Stuff sack or not? In the stuff sack my quilt is probably 8” diameter 10”tall but it forms a brick like item going into the pack with other items. Just stuffing it into the pack seems to take twice the space though it forms around everything else...

    Is September 9th early?

This year I will be in the mountains of Idaho 9/9 thru 9/16. This is earlier than I have ever gone out. Historically, trips have started on the 16th. Will there be much difference? Should I expect less bugling? Am I overthinking? Does one week make much difference? Might there be advantage week...

Bivy style hunting and 2nd set of poles.

I am considering purchasing a Silex trekking tent. I have had 3 opportunities to hunt elk. I have primarily done spike camp style in the past. This move puts me in a position to possibly “hunt with camp on my back”. Last year we were able to locate elk and every morning we had to hike back into...

Good, bad, or other... outfitter operation in area I am considering?

I thought I had decided where my archery elk adventure was going to take place this fall. Then I discovered there’s an outfitter that has permits to operate in nearly the identical areas of my plan A. I’m curious to hear opinions whether this is good, bad, or inconsequential? Thank you. Sent...

Differences worth considering Idaho vs Colorado??

I am starting preliminary planning for a DIY archery elk hunt in September 2019. I believe I am zeroing in on the central part of Idaho. I have been to Colorado twice now but I am still very much a novice and this time I am going to be the most experienced one on the trip. I am inquiring about...
