This. Only consider going to northern Maine. What isn’t public land is mostly timber company land, and open to hunting. Just drive the logging roads until you strike a fresh track you want to follow, then take it. Or hike up drainages until you find a buck track worth following and get to work...
Find a cornfield that borders a swamp area, and you’ll find where the bear are mauling the corn this time of year. Set up where you can see down the edge of the field, or back into the woods if it’s not too thick. Most farmers are more than willing to have you kill bears in the corn, and will...
$1000 shipped. Might be open to trades, though I don’t really need any more rifles. Cutlery plus cash may peak my interest, if someone had the right style of knife. Let me know what you’ve got, maybe we can work something out
Remington model 7 SS, in 7-08, in McMillan hunters edge stock.
It’s pretty clean, but has been hunted. There is a small scratch in the barrel where I slipped and fell, shown in one of the pictures. The rifle started off as a 308 model 7, and I located a take off 20” bbl with about 50 rounds on...
I used to accompany my FIL sometimes when he would guide for turkey and upland bird hunts. Like pretty much everyone else has said, it’s not exactly a high paying job, and the people skills to deal with bonehead clients is more important than most hunting skills. Sure, you’re outdoors getting to...
I 100% agree that if I was paying that kind of money, for just a bit more than the $18k I saw quoted for a lodge tag, I’d be going to Alaska for sheep and not a moose. I was fortunate that I got to hunt a few times here in VT while we still had a few moose, and the draw odds weren’t horrible...
We hunted 7, right where it turns to 8, and though we were deer hunting, had no problems seeing moose, and some nice ones at that. Logging activity abounds. Go DIY like you’re planning, and with some scouting, you should have an awesome hunt!!
I saw something the other day about “lodge” tags, so if you’re flush with cash, that may be an option. I believe I was looking at the Tea pond lodge website at the time
Maine is a sleeper state for mature deer. May not score like a Midwest deer, but if you are a tracker, it’s not difficult to find a mature buck track to follow if you’re willing to get out in the remote areas.
I bought their hunter boots and they have been amazing for me so far. I have about 200 weighted miles on them, and for me, that is where they shine. They aren’t crazy comfortable for the drive to wherever I’m hiking, but once you’re there and throw a weighted pack on, they just get more and more...
Does anyone know what the current typical deer density is in the BWCA? I have been researching for a potential future hunt, but haven’t found any recent numbers. I’m thinking it can’t be any worse than where I hunt here in VT, but that’s true of most anywhere. Lol
We did this last year, and used first lite SEAK. It held up well to the bushwhacking. I’ll second Timbercruzer’s suggestion of a set of crampons. We intended to only spend one night at the cabin and hike up to the alpine and camp, but once it started raining, couldn’t get to the sections of...
We went on public in zone 5 last year. Saw tons of bucks, and two of the three of us shot bucks. Not a ton of pressure, but there were quite a few other hunters on the public piece we hit, but most everyone was willing to make sure we were hunting different areas if we happened to run into them...
