What was your first western hunt - especially if from East of the Mississippi

Mine was Colorado OTC. If I could have changed anything that would be the one thing. OTC Elk hunting seems to be such a niche no one is going to give there honey hole, or best way to traverse the mountain side, or take you under there wing. From a Midwest predator and deer hunter this was a...

I have the Colorado's. I trained in them the first season to break them in and then only use in the mountains and they get about 20-40 miles a season and I'm going on my 5th season. Worth the cost! Going to pick up a second pair this year for my work boot. So much more comfortable than the...

When was your first year hunting OTC Elk in Colorado?

2016, still kicks my ass. I must be going about it the wrong way. Usually comes down to the 1 to 3 opportunities per year. Gets crazier every year, first year hiked almost 70 miles and didn't see another soul, no I find dudes camping right next to me 5-8 miles in!

    Favorite road music

Interesting podcasts do the trick, been hitting some Josh Meloy and Bryan Martin shit lately. Not really wake you up tunes, but to each their own.

Total Archery challenge- Terry Peak, S.D.

As of now, I am Not planning on it. I jacked up my shoulder a couple months back and just going to start shooting again this week. If something changes I’ll let you know! Otherwise Pierre is only 40 minutes from 90! Swing through and we will grab some drinks lol!

Anyone know West Elk Wilderness in GMU 54 Colorado?

Don’t think going farther will yield the results you’re looking for! I’ve been 8 miles from my truck and the last 4 off trail yet I’ve had dudes camp within 100 yards of us. This is no longer the case going further and deeper to get rid of pressure, it just doesn’t happen. You’d have better luck...

    Photography- one photo a day

As an insurance adjuster in the Midwest summers are tough… sometimes it’s worth taking an evening off. I was able to catch this of the boys while shore fishing…just a reminder to enjoy the things that are truly important in life!

How many of you guys leave your hunting backpack packed with all your gear? Or unpack it and store it?

After I get back I usually sort everything into different “kits”. Have the stuff I’ll use predator hunting, deer hunting, and then the few things that are exclusive to the annual mountain/backcountry hunt.

    Let’s hear some horror stories

Yeah man it’s funny AF looking back to your first backpacking trip!! That day going forward I vowed to be sure to learn everything I could and pass on to my children as my dad didn’t do anything like that lol. And now I freaking count every ounce on a spreadsheet. Down to every bullet/arrow...

    Let’s hear some horror stories

First ever backcountry hunt which was also the first time setting eyes on large deep back country mountain ranges, and trying to survive 10 days away from everyday comforts. Such a hilarious photo and look back at what my pack looked like! Packing your insecurities is an understatement. Had like...

Best Advice for First Time OTC Colorado

Deeper is not better, elk are where they are. If you’re confident with your physical preparedness best prepare your mentality. Solo backcountry is very difficult. Just keep trucking. Be prepared to be deep and miles from the nearest trail and come across Hunter after Hunter after Hunter. I’ve...

Who has ditched the trusted Nalgene bottle?

I have gone back forth with this. Last two years in the cold temps it’s been worth the weight, no question. Heat up boiling water before bed and fill the Nalgene, put that in your quilt/sleeping bag and it’s a heater all night!

How long does it take to field dress a mule deer?

Assuming everyone is different. My first year doing the gutless method I had 3 Deer tags filled. First one was almost two hours. The third one took me 45 minutes….I will also note I am not “neat”. All I care about is getting it off the bone and into Gallon zip lock bags as I grind all my venison.

    First time backcountry hunt

This is the best comment so far. It takes a special kind of partner to hike 20-80+ miles on and off trail. Elk hunting in high pressured areas are tough. It’s tough because a lot of it you’ll be learning from your mistakes vs. someone showing you “the way”. Then to do that and come up empty...

    Everyday t shirt suggestions

Another vote for Black Ovis Merino T’s. As an Insurnace adjuster in the Midwest these things are amazing in the heat! I’ll wear the same one for the week still no stink! Once it’s not so damn hot I’ll run the Mnt Ops Merino hoodies over them.

    Hammock Gear burrow quilt

I did actually go this route last year. I bought the econ burrow 10 degree. Used it with a bivy and SG SkyAir lightweight tarp. As long as you specify you will be using it with sleeping pad and get the sleeping pad suspension it will work just fine....that being said i did run into issues. I...
