Last minute Colorado unit 20 archery thoughts

My neighbor had an either sex this past year and ended up killing a cow. They had a good hunt, but their family has also been in the area for the last 50 years and know the pockets where the elk hang out on public. Be prepared to deal with a lot of recreationalists. The night they got there to...

Day hunting out of the truck?

Backpack hunting is a fad, nowadays you’re just as likely to run into people 6 miles back as you are a mile from your truck. The difference is if you figure out there’s no animals where you backpacked into it’s a lot harder to pick up and move than if you were just hunting from your truck every...

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I love reading these recaps. Also, good job sticking with it. Hard to keep your head in the game after that long.

This one time at Elk camp…

Had almost that exact scenario play out during mule deer season this year. Had a little 2x2 in range but as I was moving to close the distance on a nice 3x3 beyond him, 2 guys came up over the ridge he was feeding on and blew him out. Skylined themselves and the worst part was they were talking...

Which do you think is hunted harder OTC archery or Rifle in CO

I guess it probably depends where you hunt for archery. I’ve done otc twice and I’ve seen a total of three hunters, and not a ton of rigs at the trailheads. During otc rifle or some of the 1st rifle hunts where there’s a ton of tags available you’d think the battle of Gettysburg was getting...

Best online course to learn Elk hunting?

This is great advice. When I started doing this a few years ago, boots on the ground wasn’t really an option due to a number of life’s circumstances so I used the classes and videos. It’s a good starting point but there’s no substitute for intimately learning an area during a particular season...

Best online course to learn Elk hunting?

I haven’t tried his course but his podcasts and YouTube videos are full of info and detail that you don’t see everywhere else. I would imagine the course would be great.

splitting the difference cold/warm barrel question..

So the fix should be tightening the screws? I'm not a sniper by any means but for it to be consistently in the same place on the first shot every time makes me think it's not just me.

splitting the difference cold/warm barrel question..

I have the exact same problem with a different rifle only a little more exaggerated (1st shot at 2” at 100 yds, then back down to 3/4” MOA). This has happened exactly the same the past 6 times I’ve been to the range. I’ve shot this same rifle for seven years and it didn’t start until last year...

First time wild pig on pellet smoker. Advice?

I second the water or some form of liquid in the smoker. For pork I like to do equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, then sometimes toss in a chopped up onion. A neighbor in Texas taught me that and the results have always been great.

First time Mule Deer Hunter - Colorado

You’ve got to be able to read topo maps, and imo you have to have had one of those oh $hit moments to recognize what is too steep. I’d start by looking at the contours and then switch to google earth to get a better look at the vegetation and deadfall situation.

I second this. All the elk migrated to Idaho anyway

Gonna burn my CO Antelope Points....Unit 87 or 88???

I can see 87 from my house but from what I understand talking to several guys that’ve hunted it the last few years, if you don’t knock one down on the first day it can be tough hunting. There’s a cattle “observatory” that is off-limits to hunters that they all flock to once the shooting starts...
